From 1956 until 1962, Larisa Latynina seemed unstoppable. She won the all-around at every major gymnastics competition: the 1956 Olympics, the 1957 Europeans, the 1958 World Championships, the 1959 Europeans, the 1960 Olympics, the 1961 Europeans, and the 1962 World Championships. (The Soviet Union did not participate in the 1963 Europeans.)
But her luck changed in 1964 when Věra Čáslavská won the all-around gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and Latynina had to settle for silver.
After the Olympics, just a few days shy of her 30th birthday, Latynina had to settle for silver once again at the USSR Championships. This time, she lost to 15-year-old Larisa Petrik, a gymnast half her age.
This was a watershed moment in the history of women’s gymnastics — not simply because it marked the beginning of the end of Latynina’s dominance but also because it marked a shift in women’s gymnastics toward younger gymnasts.
While there had been teenagers at major international competitions after World War II — 16-year-old Čáslavská, for example, became a crowd favorite when she won team silver at the 1958 World Championships — Petrik’s victory was different. The Soviet Union was the indisputable leader in women’s gymnastics, and for over a decade, their teams had relied primarily on adult women. Then, in 1964, a teenager became the best gymnast in the country and was victorious over someone who had seemed unbeatable internationally for years.
Note: From 1956 until 1962, there were several domestic competitions that Latynina did not win, including the USSR Championships. But this was the first time that she lost to a gymnast half her age.
The news of Petrik’s win made headlines in many of the Soviet Union’s prominent newspapers. In this post, we’ll look at some of those news accounts from December 1964.

A Profile of Petrik
15-Year-Old Champion
It was Larisa Petrik’s father who brought his ten-year-old daughter to the Palace of Culture in Vitebsk. The swift girl liked it in the sports hall. She wanted to walk on the beam, climb on the bars. The coach, however, demanded strict exercising, which was necessary but sometimes boring. Besides, she had to attend her classes on the second shift, and she had to train with the boys. Larisa never wanted to give in to the guys and always worked hard to keep up. Maybe that’s where her perseverance came from.
Training did not weaken her diligence at school. She kept receiving good grades in her school progress report. Larisa also liked mathematics:
“I love mathematics because it makes you think and look for the solution,” she said. Looking for something new has become her rule.
At the age of 13, Larisa, under the guidance of a young coach V. D. Dmitriev, boldly began to practice the high-level master program — the highest level of gymnastics.
[In the Soviet Union, there were several levels in sport — from highest to lowest: Honored Master of Sport of the USSR; Master of Sport of the USSR, International Class; Master of Sport of the USSR; Candidate for Master of Sport of the USSR; First-Class Sportsman; Second-Class Sportsman; Third-Class Sportsman, First-Class Junior Sportsman; Second-Class Junior Sportsman; and Third-Class Junior Sportsman.]
The very first performance in Gomel brought her the title of master. In Minsk, she won the championship of the republic. The victory at the regional competitions in Tallinn completed the success of the season. There remained the championship of the USSR in Kyiv.
Larisa went to Kyiv with bated breath. For the first time she was going to perform among those who, two or three years ago, seemed out of her reach: Latynina, Astakhova, Manina — she had all the reasons to be anxious.
It was a very tough competition. And when the announcer said: “The title of the absolute champion of the USSR goes to Larisa Petrik (“Dinamo,” Belarus), she, still not believing what she’d just heard, suddenly burst into tears. Becoming a national champion at the age of fifteen is not a common thing, especially in a sport like gymnastics.

Шустрой девочке понравилось в зале. Ей хотелось пройтись по бревну, влезть на
брусья. Но тренер требовал неуклонного выполнения необходимых и порой скучных упражнений. Тут еще занятия в школе перенесли во вторую смену, и пришлось тренироваться вместе с мальчишками. Лариса ни за что не хотела уступать ребятам и всегда старалась быть с ними наравне. Может быть, тут и воспиталось ее упорство.
Тренировки не ослабили усердия в школе. Все так же в дневнике появлялись четверки и пятерки, так же нравилась математика. «Математику я люблю потому, что в ней надо думать, искать правильное решение»,— говорила она. Искать новое стало ее правилом.
В 13 лет Лариса под руководством молодого тренера В. Д. Дмитриева дерзко начала осваивать программу мастеров — высшую ступень гимнастики.
Первое же выступление в Гомеле принесло девочке звание мастера. В Минске она выиграла чемпионат республики. Победа на зональных соревнованиях в Таллине завершила успех сезона, Оставалось первенство СССР в Киеве.
В Киев Лариса ехала с замиранием сердца. Впервые предстояло выступать среди тех, которые еще два-три го-да назад казались недосягаемыми: Латынина, Астахова, Манина — было от чего трепетать.
Это было труднейшее состязание. И когда диктор произнес: «Звание абсолютной чемпионки СССР завоевала Лариса Петрик («Динамо», Белоруссия), она, все еще не веря услышанному, вдруг расплакалась. Что и говорить, не часто становятся чемпионами страны в пятнадцать лет, да еще в таком виде спорта, как гимнастика.

In women’s competition, there was a pleasant surprise, which is the performance of a young gymnast named Larisa Petrik. The 15-year-old Larisa Petrik has become the absolute champion of the Soviet Union.
It is a huge success for her coach Dmitriev as well. A worthy generation of the country’s new Olympians is being brought up.

Young Gymnasts Triumph
It is common for gymnasts to call difficult new exercises with the word “ultra-C” – courtesy of the Japanese athletes. What happened on Sunday at the national gymnastics championship in Kyiv exceeded the expectations of the most ardent dreamers and “prophets.” Individual competitions of the country’s strongest gymnasts unexpectedly brought a brilliant victory to 15-year-old ninth-grader from Vitebsk Larisa Petrik, who scored 37.55 points in four all-around events (it was an optional program competition) and became the all-around champion of the USSR. A big gold medal, a victory over honored masters, participants in the Tokyo Olympics — this was Larisa’s “ultra-C.”
[Note: At the time in men’s gymnastics, there were three difficulty categories for elements: A, B, and C. An ultra-C was a skill that was even harder than a C.]
Another Larisa, incomparably more experienced, Latynina, although she showed off her perfect skill and a stunning will to win, scored 0.05 points less. Third was Elena Tyazhelova (37.45) from Moscow Dinamo. Another young gymnast who is worth mentioning is Natasha Kuchinskaya – a wonderful schoolgirl from Leningrad, a student of a special mathematical school, who at some point was leading, but she fell on the balance beam and rolled back to one of the last positions.
Subtle and experienced connoisseurs of gymnastics of Kyiv awarded with a storm of applause a rare element on the parallel bars, shown for the first time in gymnastics by 20-year-old army soldier from Tashkent Sergei Diomidov. A 19-year-old Dinamo gymnast from Moscow Mikhail Voronin impressed the spectators with his routines on rings.
A tense competition resulted in the victory of the experienced all-rounder Viktor Lisitsky from Moscow Armed Forces team, who scored 57.35 points. Yuri Tsapenko from Dinamo (Moscow region) lost to him by 0.25 points; third place in the all-round competition went to Sergei Diomidov.
On Saturday we already knew who the winners in the team total would be. In the female and male competition, the winners were the Armed Forces teams, while Dinamo and Burevestnik gymnasts took second place.

Last Sunday, millions of TV-viewers got a real treat: the final competitions for the USSR championship in gymnastics, which was broadcasted live from the Kyiv Palace of Sports. Even people who are not into gymnastics could hardly stay indifferent. A rare struggle flared up on the stage. And most importantly, it was the young gymnasts who set the tone. They brought their special touch to one of the largest competitions of the year.
Now we can say with confidence that we have a new group of excellent gymnasts. They might still lack experience but it will surely come with time.
For example, young gymnasts from Moscow Valeri Karasev and especially Mikhail Voronin received the highest score from the eminent experts.
While praising the young, we shouldn’t forget that our “seniors” have not yet said their last word. The synthesis of experience and youth will certainly bring success to our gymnastics. The European Championships are coming up in May in Bulgaria and Belgium. These competitions are one of many rehearsals for the XIXth Olympic Games in Mexico City.
Another particularity of the ended USSR championship: the judges were very strict and exacting. It is the only approach to evaluate the performances of our athletes.

Личные состязания сильнейших гимнасток страны неожиданно принесли блистательную победу 15-летней девятикласснице из Витебска Ларисе Петрик, которая в четырех видах многоборья (соревнования шли по произвольной программе) набрала 37,55 балла и стала абсолютной чемпионкой СССР. Большая золотая медаль, победа над заслуженными мастерами, участниками токийской олимпиады,— это и было «ультра-си» Ларисы.
Другая Лариса, несравненно более опытная, Латынина, хотя и блеснула совершенным мастерством л удивительной волей к победе, получила на пять сотых балла меньше. Третьей была московская динамовка Елена Тяжелова (37,45). Хочется еще отметить замечательную школьницу из Ленинграда — ученицу специальной математической школы Наташу Кучинскую, которая даже лидировала, но из-за срыва на бревне откатилась на одно из последних мест.
Киевляне, тонкие и опытные ценители гимнастики, отметили бурей оваций редкостный элемент на брусьях, впервые в гимнастике показанный 20-летним армейцем из Ташкента Сергеем Диамидовым. 19-летний динамовец из Москвы Михаил Воронин поразил своими упражнениями на кольцах.
Напряженная борьба принесла победу опытному многоборцу армейцу Виктору Лисицкому (Москва) — 57,35 балла. Четверть балла проиграл ему динамовец Юрий Цапенко (Московская область) третьим в многоборье был Сергей Диамидов.
Еще в субботу определились победители в командном зачете. У женщин и у мужчин первенство завоевали гимнасты Вооруженных Сил, на вторых местах— динамовцы и гимнастки «Буревестника».

В минувшее воскресенье миллионы телезрителей получили истинное удовольствие: показывали заключительные соревнования на первенство СССР по гимнастике. Шла трансляция из Киевского дворца спорта. Даже люди далекие от гимнастики вряд ли могли остаться равнодушными. На помосте разгорелась редкая по накалу борьба. И самое главное — тон задали молодые, а точнее, юные гимнастки. Они-то и придали особую окраску одному из крупнейших состязаний уходящего года.
Теперь можно с уверенностью сказать. что у нас появилась группа превосходных гимнасток и гимнастов. Пусть им еще недостает опыта — это со временем придет.
Лестных оценок видных специалистов заслужили, например, молодые москвичи Валерий Карасев и особенно Михаил Воронин.
Отдавая должное молодым, заметим. что наши ветераны еще не сказали своего последнего слова. Синтез опыта и молодости принесет нашей гимнастике безусловные успехи. В мае в Болгарии и Бельгии предстоят чемпионаты Европы. Эти встречи — одна из многих репетиций к XIX Олимпийским играм в Мехико.
И еще одна характерная деталь за кончившегося чемпионата СССР: судьи были очень строги и взыскательны. Только с таких позиций и нужно подходить к оценке выступлений наших мастеров.

After three days of competition, today we finally know who will be the winners of the national artistic gymnastics championship. First place of the team competition went to the athletes of the Armed Forces.
In the men’s competition, first place went to the Armed Forces team, second place was taken by the Dinamo team, and the second Armed Forces team won third place. The teams were awarded with diplomas and the athletes – with medals.
Regarding the women’s team, first place went to the athletes from the first Armed Forces team, second place went to the first “Burevestnik” team, and third place was taken by the second “Trud” team.
In the interview with the “Pravda” reporter, the chief coach of the national USSR team, the Merited Sports Master V.I. Muratov said:
– This year’s championship is particularly important. Our large crew of skillful gymnasts is growing with young and talented athletes. Mainly with young men and women under twenty. I’m glad that among the generally recognized athletes who will challenge the title of the country’s absolute champion in artistic gymnastics today, we see 16-year-old Natalia Kuchinskaya (“Trud”) from Leningrad, her fellow member of club Valeriy Karasev – a 17-year-old gymnast from Moscow. Aman Shaniyazov from Turkmenistan, Ukrainian Valeriy Medvedev, and Aleksandr Konovalov from Moscow were also in the group of leaders. Among the girls, sisters Irina and Tatiana Antonova, Tania Kitlyarova (all from Moscow) and Iya Ivanova from Leningrad reached the top
The performances of the young gymnasts stand out with their maturity and confidence. Young men and women dare to complicate the elements in various combinations. Thanks to this, Larisa Petrik– a 15-year-old gymnast from Vitebsk, was a serious rival to many experienced gymnasts.

У мужчин на первое место вышла первая команда Вооруженных Сил, на второе — первая команда «Динамо», на третье — вторая команда Вооруженных Сил. Команды удостоены дипломов, а спортсмены — медалей.

Отрадно, что среди общепризнанных мастеров, которые будут сегодня оспаривать звание абсолютного чемпиона страны по спортивной гимнастике, мы видим 16-летнюю Наталию Кучинскую («Труд») иэ Ленинграда, ее одноклубника — 17-летнего москвича Валерия Карасева. В группе лидеров оказались также Аман Шанияэов иэ Туркмении, украинец Валерий Медведев, москвич Александр Коновалов. Среди девушек успеха добились сестры Ирина и Татьяна Антоновы, Таня Китлярова (все — Москва), Ия Иванова — иэ Ленинграда.

At the national championship in artistic gymnastics, all the prizes for teams were played out, the strongest gymnasts in the all-around were identified.
There were some sensations too. The honorary title of the absolute champion of the Soviet Union this year was won by a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Vitebsk Larisa Petrik. The spectators, who attended the competitions at the Sports Palace of Kyiv, appreciated immediately the skill of the young gymnast. Finally, Larisa conquered them with the clarity and purity of exercises on such a tricky apparatus as the beam. However, the schoolgirl from Belarus received the highest score on this apparatus, leaving behind many experienced gymnasts. She performed perfectly on the final day of the competition as well. Larisa Petrik became the absolute champion of the country with the best total score in the all-around (37.55).
The silver medal went to the gymnast from Kyiv Larisa Latynina (37.5), while the bronze went to Elena Tyazhelova from Moscow (37.45).
In men’s competition, the title of the absolute champion of the USSR was won by an athlete from the AF Viktor Lisitsky (57.35), second place went to Yuri Tsapenko from Dinamo (57.1). Third place was taken by a young gymnast from Uzbekistan Sergei Diomidov (Armed Forces) – 57.0.
