In the lead-up to the 1972 Olympics, the first big test for Soviet gymnasts was the USSR Championships, held in Kyiv at the end of March and the beginning of April.
Tourischeva and Lazakovich were the clear favorites on the women’s side, but people were eager to see if gymnasts from the 1968 Olympics like Karaseva and Voronina could hang on. Dronova, another aspirant for the Olympic Team, was still recovering from an injury.
There were three clear frontrunners on the men’s side: Klimenko, Voronin, and Andrianov.

Reminder: The USSR Championships and the USSR Cup were two separate competitions. Both competitions were held in the lead-up to the 1972 Olympics.
Note: Korbut is not mentioned in the article. In her autobiography My Story, Korbut posits that Stanislav Tokarev, the author of this article, did not appreciate her gymnastics prior to the Munich Olympics.
UKRAINE MISSED GYMNASTICS
KYIV, March 30. (Our special correspondent).
On Friday, the USSR individual and team gymnastics championship will begin in the capital of Ukraine. 154 athletes, who represent “Dynamo,” “Armed Forces,” “Spartak,” “Trud,” “Burevestnik,” “Lokomotiv,” “Zenit,” “Trudovye Rezervy,” and “Avangard” are to start the championship.
The regulations are very similar to the ones of the Olympic Games. The first day is devoted to the compulsories, the second — to the optional program, then, based on these two days results, is determined the champion team. Sixteen male and female gymnasts with the best results in the compulsory and optional programs move on to the all-around final. The individual championship result is made of the compulsories and the second, final optional score. Thus, the compulsories, and namely the athlete’s school training, gains more value.
[Note: In other words, there were three days of competition: compulsories, optionals, and the all-around final, where the gymnasts once again performed their optional routines. The first round of optionals counted in the sense that it determined the team titles and which individuals qualified for the all-around final. However, that first round of optionals did not count toward a gymnast’s final all-around score during the USSR Championships. The all-around total was determined based on the scores from the compulsories and all-around finals.]
In the team championship, the favorites are the same. For women, it’s “Dynamo.” Among seven members of the first team, six make part of the national team. For men, it’s the Armed Forces team. Dynamo presented two women’s teams, the Armed Forces — two men’s teams, and this time both teams will equally dispute for the prizes.
An extremely intense competition is expected in the individual championship. This championship will also be one of the qualifying rounds for our future Olympic team. Almost all of our strongest gymnasts will join the fight. I say “almost” because N. Dronova, R. Sikharulidze, and A. Trifonov will not be able to compete due to their injuries. Dronova, though, is now well and has already resumed her training. All the others are fine and in perfect shape.
The women’s competition is interesting due to the dispute between the all-around world champion, L. Tourischeva and last year’s national champion, T. Lazakovich — they both hold the title of European champions. L. Burda will surely participate in the dispute, though it has been a while since she performed on the big All-Union stage. We also expect a successful performance from O. Karaseva and Z. Voronina — older generation gymnasts, although, as you may understand, they are still quite young. There have not been so many contenders for the national Olympic team for a long time. Their performances are under close and biased scrutiny, especially considering their recent loss to our main Olympic rivals — the GDR team.
The four-time national champion, ex-world champion, M. Voronin, and the European all-around champion, V. Klimenko, will continue to compete for leadership in our men’s gymnastics. The upcoming days will show whether N. Andrianov is ready to be their equal, and whether S. Diomidov is still full of vigor and energy.
The judges panel, with the judge of the international category A. Mordovin at its head, includes almost all the best Soviet gymnasts of the recent past. T. Manina, L. Ivanova, B. Shakhlin, A. Azaryan, N. Miligulo, P. Stolbov, and others.
Kyiv really missed great gymnastics. After all, it hasn’t hosted the competitions of such level for eight years. However, Ukraine still loves gymnastics and remembers the glorious names of M. Gorokhovskaya, N. Bocharova, L. Latynina, P. Astakhova, A. Ibadulaev, V. Chukarin, B. Shakhlin, Y. Titov. Therefore, the championship attracts strong interest. The city is festively decorated, the railway station and the airport are covered with welcome posters as well as with the flags of sports societies. The educational institutions and the special enterprises committees of the capital take care of the teams.

УКРАИНА СОСКУЧИЛАСЬ ПО ГИМНАСТИКЕ
КИЕВ, 30 марта. (Наш спец. корр.). В пятницу в столице Украины открывается лично-командное первенство СССР по спортивной гимнастике. Старт принимают 154 спортсмена, представляющие «Динамо», Вооруженные Силы, «Спартак», «Труд», «Буревестник», «Локомотив», «Зенит», «Трудовые резервы» в «Авангард».
Регламент соревнований приближен к олимпийскому. В первый день проводится обязательная программа, затем произвольная, и по итогам этих двух дней определяется команда-чемпион. По 16 гимнасток и гимнастов, имеюших лучшие результаты в обязательной и произвольной, выходят в финал многоборья, но итоговый результат личного первенства составляется из обязательной плюс вторая, финальная произвольная. Таким образом, повышается ценность обязательной программы, школьной подготовки спортсмена.
В командном первенстве фавориты прежние. У женщин это динамовки, среди которых из семи участниц первой команды — шесть членов сборной страны. У мужчин — армейцы. «Динамо» выставило две женские сборные, Вооруженные Силы -— две мужские, Первые и вторые коллективы на сей раз равноправно претендуют на призы.
Чрезвычайно острая конкуренция ожидается в личном первенстве. Ведь чемпионат одновременно служит первым из трех туров отбора наших будущих олимпийских секстетов. В борьбу вступят почти все наши сильнейшие. Оговорка «почти» связана с тем, что из-за травм не смогут выступить Н. Дронова (она, впрочем, сейчас уже здорова и приступила к тренировкам), Р. Сихарулидзе и А. Трифонов. Остальные в строю и в неплохой форме.
У женщин интересен спор между абсолютной чемпионкой мира Л. Турищевой и прошлогодней чемпионкой страны Т. Лазакович — напомню, что обе они носят титул чемпионок Европы, Несомненно, в этот спор вмешается и Л. Бурда, сравнительно давно не выходившая на большой всесоюзный помост, Надо надеяться на успешное выступление О. Карасевой и 3. Ворониной — представительниц теперь уже старшего поколения, хотя они, как вы сами понимаете, достаточно молоды, И вообще, пожалуй, давно не было у нес такого количества претенденток на места в сборной, Их выступления привлекают особо строгое и пристрастное внимание ввиду хотя бы недавнего проигрыша нашим главным олимпийским соперникам — сборной ГДР.
Четырехкратный чемпион страны, экс-чемпион мира M. Воронин и абсолютный — чемпион Европы В. Клименко продолжат выяснение — отношений на предмет лидерства в нашей мужской гимнастике. Ближайшие дни покажут, готов ли к борьбе с ними на равных Н. Андрианов, по-прежнему ли полон сил и энергии С. Диомидов.
Судейская коллегия, возглавляемая судьей международной категории А. Мордовиным, включает чуть ли не всех лучших советских гимнастов недавнего прошлого, Достаточно сказать, что в числе арбитров Т. Манина, Л. Иванова, Б. Шахлин, А. Азарян, Н. Милигуло, П. Столбов и другие.
Киев действительно соскучился го большой гимнастике. Как-никак уже восемь летоздесь не проводилось соревнований подобного ранга, а ведь Украина любит этот вид спорта и помнит славные имена М. Гороховской, Н, Бочаровой, Л. Латыниной вн П. Астаховой, А. Ибадулаева, В. Чукарина, Б. Швахлина, Ю. Титова. Поэтому интерес к чемпионату велик, Город празднично украшен, на вокзале и в аэропорту — приветственные плакаты, флаги спортивных обществ, Над командами шефствуют коллективы предприятий ин учебных заведений столицы республики.
