In October of 1971, just days after the European Championships, the Soviet Union and the East German gymnasts faced off. The Soviet Union won, and Olga Korbut won the all-around.
A few months later, in March of 1972, the two teams held another dual meet. This time, the East German team won, and Karin Janz won the all-around.
Ludmilla Tourischeva was absent, and reportedly, Olga Korbut had to withdraw due to injury. Nevertheless, the East German press was excited about this victory during an Olympic year, especially the team’s progress on floor exercise.

After compulsories: GDR and Karin Janz
Surprisingly safe lead for GDR at halftime of the tournament in Halle against the squad of the USSR with 182.70: 181.00
After the first day of competition of the 8th official international competition of the gymnasts of the USSR and the GDR in the sports hall of Halle-Neustadt, the host team leads by 1.70 points. In the individual rankings, Karin Janz proved to be the most experienced performer with the remarkable compulsory scores of 9.25 and three times 9.40. But throughout the compulsory competition, the top Soviet gymnasts Lyuba Burda and Tamara Lazakovich were close behind her on her heels. After compulsory floor, they occupy the places in the same order ahead of Angelika Hellmann and Irene Abel.
The excellent team result of our girls on the floor was decisive for the secure GDR lead at half time of the international competition. This is where the greatest opportunities for creative gymnastics are offered if the prescribed compulsory elements and connections are observed.
That it was finally possible to successfully shake things up in this domain of the Soviet gymnasts — for years they had occupied the dominant position here, and quite a few head-to-head battles against the Soviet gymnasts were lost for our girls on floor exercise — and being 0.15 points better is considered a success. After all, the compulsory floor exercise is new territory for coaches and athletes alike. It was also surprising when Soviet gymnasts made more mistakes on the uneven bars. Olga Karasova, silver medalist at the 1969 European Championships, had to interrupt the exercise as well as the great talent Olga Korbut. Both had to accept a score below 8 points. The USSR team lost almost one and a half points on this apparatus against the East German gymnasts, who were in no way outstanding on the uneven bars.

Überraschend sichere DDR-Führung bei Halbzeit des Turnländerkampfes in Halle gegen die Riege der UdSSR mit 182,70 : 181,00
Nach dem ersten Wettkampftag des 8. offiziellen Landerkampfes der Turnerinnen der UdSSR und der DDR führt in der Sporthalle von Halle-Neustadt die Riege der Gastgeberinnen mit einem Vorsprung von 1,70 Punkten die Wertung an. In der Einzelwertung erwies sich Karin Janz mit den bemerkenswerten Pflichtnoten von 9.25 und dreimal 9.40 als versierteste Könnerin. Doch folgten ihr während des gesamten Pflichtwettbewerbes die sowjetischen Spitzenturnerinnen Ljuba Burda und Tamara Lasakowitsch auf den Fersen. Sie belegen nach der Pflichtkür in dar gleichen Reihenfolge die Plätze vor Angelika Hellmann und Irene Abel.
Entscheidend für die sichere DDR-Führung bei Halbzeit des Landerkampfes war vor allem das hervorragende Mannschaftsergebnis unserer Mädchen am Boden. Hier boten sich bei Einhaltung der vorgeschriebenen Pflichtelemente und -Verbindungen die größten Möglichkeiten eigengestalterischen Turnens.
Daß es gelang, in der Endabrechnung an dieser Domäne der sowjetischen Turnerinnen — seit Jahren belegten sie hier den dominierenden Rang, und nicht wenige Vergleichskämpfe gegen die sowjetischen Turnerinnen gingen für unsere Mädchen gerade am Boden verloren — endlich einmal erfolgreich zu rütteln und 0,15 Punkte besser zu sein, ist als Erfolg zu werten. Schließlich ist die Pflichtkür für Trainer und Aktive gleichermaßen Neuland. Es war auch überraschend, als sich ausgerechnet am Stufenbarren die Fehler der sowjetischen Turnerinnen häuften. Olga Karassjowa Vizeeuropameisterin 1969, mußte die Übung ebenso unterbrechen wie das große Talent Olga Korbut. Beide mußten eine Wertung unter 8 Punkten in Kauf nehmen. Die UdSSR-Mannschaft büßte an diesem Gerät fast anderthalb Punkte gegen die keineswegs mit überragenden Leistungen am Stufenbarren aufwartenden DDR-Turnerinnen ein.
Einzelwertung: 1. Janz (DDR) 37,45, 2. Burda . 37,30, 3. Lasakowitsch (beide UdSSR) 37,20, 4. Hellmann 36,20, 5. Abel 36,05, 8. Schmitt (alle DDR) 35.90.
GDR women continued to increase their lead
Clear victory in the women’s gymnastics competition GDR-USSR: 369.80: 366.55
The second day of the international gymnastics competition in the sold-out sports hall in Halle-Neustadt confirmed no less impressively than the first that our women’s gymnastics team used the past non-competitive time well to prepare for the climax of the Olympic season. In this way, they were not only able to maintain the lead they had achieved in the compulsory competition, but were even able to expand it further. As on the day before, most of the ground in the optional competition was made up on the uneven bars. The lowest GDR score here was 9.20, while on the Soviet squad, which had more errors overall, Olga Karasova scored 8.95. Only on the floor did the guests, who had to replace Olga Korbut, who was injured while warming up, with Tatiana Rtischeva, who was still internationally inexperienced, had a higher score than the GDR team.
In the end, the result was 369.80 : 366.55. For the first time in the history of the gymnastics competitions between the two socialist sister nations, the GDR girls emerged victorious with a 3.25-point lead.
In the individual standings, world champion in uneven bars, Karin Janz, was able to extend her top position from the previous day and extend the gap over second-place Lyubov Burda to almost one point. European champion Tamara Lazakovich was third ahead of world champion on balance beam and vault, Erika Zuchold. Erika achieved one of the most remarkable performances in the optional competition when she moved up from ninth place to fourth after the compulsory portion. Her impressive series of scores shows the concentration with which she went about her work: 9.45 on vault, 9.60 on uneven bars, 9.30 on beam, 9.60 on floor.
Irene Abel, who is the only newcomer in the ranks of gymnasts with World Championship experience, deserves special praise and took eighth place.

DDR-Frauen bauten Vorsprung weiter aus
Klarer Sieg im Frauen-Turnländerkampf DDR-UdSSR: 369,80 : 366,55
Der zweite Tag des Turnländerkampfes in der ausverkauften Sporthalle von Halle-Neustadt bestätigte nicht weniger eindrucksvoll als der erste, daß unsere Turnfrauen die vergangene wettkampffrele Zeit gut zur Vorbereitung auf die Höhepunkte der olympischen Saison genutzt haben. So konnten sie nicht nur den im Pflichtwetrtbewerb herausgeturnten Vorsprung halten, sondern sogar noch weiter ausbauen. Im Kürwettbewerb wurde am meisten Boden — wie schon am Vortage — am Stufenbarren gut gemacht. Die niedrigste DDR-Wertung war hier 9.20, während in der sowjetischen Riege, die insgesamt mehr Fehler aufzuweisen hatte, eine 8.95 von Olga Karassjowa in die Wertung kam. Lediglich am Boden hatten die Gäste, die die beim Einturnen verletzte Olga Korbut durch die international noch unerfahrene Tanja Ristschichewa ersetzen mußten, eine höhere Wertung aufzuweisen als die DDR-Mannschaft.
So lautete am Ende das Resultat 369,80 : 366,55. Zum ersten Male in der Geschichte der Turnländerkämpfe beider Sozialistischer Bruderländer gingen die DDR-Madchen mit einem 3,25-Punkte-Vorsprung als Sieger hervor.
In der Einzelwertung konnte Barrenweltmeisterin Karin Janz ihre bereits am Vortage errungene Spitzenposition weiter ausbauen und den Abstand zur Zweiten, Ljubow Burda, auf fast einen Punkt ausdehnen. Europameistarin Tamara Lasakowitsch wurde Dritte vor der Weltmeisterin am Schwebebalken und im Sprung, Erika Zuchold. Erika vollbrachte im Kürwettkampf eine der bemerkenswertesten Leistungen, als sie sich von Rang neun nach der Pflicht noch auf Platz vier vorturnte. Ihre beeindruckende Notenreihe beweist mit welcher Konzentration sie dabei zu Werke ging: 9.45 im Sprung, 9.60 am Barren, 9.30 am Balken, 9.60 am Boden.
Lob verdient auch besonders Irene Abel, die sich als einziger Neuling in der Riege weltmeisterschaftserfahrener Turnerinnen ausgezeichnet hielt und Platz acht belegte.
