1972: Sovetsky Sport’s Coverage of the Women’s Event Finals

Only two countries medaled in the women’s event finals: the Soviet Union and East Germany. Sovetsky Sport concluded that “the Soviet and German sportswomen now fully dominate in women’s gymnastics and determine the course of its development.”

Given the newspaper’s emphasis on the friendliness between the gymnasts of both countries, it had to tread lightly when discussing the uneven bars final. Without saying that Olga Korbut should have won the title, it implied as much. But it was quick to point out that the fault was with the FIG and the judges.

Here’s what Sovetsky Sport wrote about the 1972 event finals.

Olga Korbut (USSR), Munich 1972

ONE HALF TO ONE, THE OTHER HALF TO THE OTHER

ABOUT FOUR MEDALS AND SUPERTRICKS, SYMPATHIES AND PARTIALITY, IN SHORT, ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED ON THE FAREWELL EVENING IN THE CROWDED SPORTHALLE.

The Olympic Sporthalle broke all capacity records that evening. The spectators sat in the aisles, squeezed between the seats, and crowded in the gallery, where there was standing room, so it was simply impossible to turn round. The spectators came to say goodbye to the girls they had come to know and love over the past few days.

That evening, the flags of only two countries, the German Democratic Republic and the Soviet Union, were raised on the flagpole, and a military band played their national anthems. And this is logical, because the Soviet and German sportswomen now fully dominate in women’s gymnastics and determine the course of its development.

Four small, action-packed spectacles were played that evening by beautiful performers. There were dramatic conflicts in their acts, and the hall, which had been helped to know gymnastics during this time, reacted vigorously to them.

VAULT. Before the finals, L. Tourischeva was just slightly ahead of K. Janz – by only 0.025 points. It had become a good rule for Lyuda to show two different vaults in the finals of any competition. Tourischeva did not break that rule at the Olympics either; first, she made a vault with a “kip” movement [i.e. a Yamashita], and then did a front handspring with a 360-degree turn. But she did not hit the board properly in any of the attempts, and the score was 9.6. And that was clearly not enough to compete with Janz. The leader of the GDR team immediately confirmed it. On her first attempt, when doing a front handspring with a twist, she flew high and froze on the spot. She was given 9.9 – that was more than enough for the gold medal.

E. Zuchold took second place. All that was no coincidence. The GDR had developed an excellent school of vaulting for both women and men. She gets her laurels by right.

BARS. In recent years, unprecedented progress has been made on this apparatus. The combinations of the strongest are staggering. One of them — with three (!) pinwheels [i.e. Burda twirls] — was demonstrated by Tourischeva, for which she got 9.8 points. Zuchold got the same score. The hall took it calmly. But when everyone’s favorite, O. Korbut, who had conquered everyone here with her polished and cheerful skill, got the same score, the Sporthalle rumbled! The spectators were indignant and demanded a higher score. But that, as we know, will not happen.

When Janz approached the apparatus, the hall became calmer. Karin excellently performed her routine, which was embellished with a rare element — a somersault between the bars. Both its complexity and purity met the world’s best standards. It was 9.9 again, and, considering she had had a very high score on the bars before, there could only be one outcome; Janz is a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

BALANCE BEAM. T. Lazakovich performed her routine elegantly, almost without errors. Not once did she sway or get out of rhythm. One couldn’t have had a higher score — 9.8! As it turned out, it was still possible to go higher. Korbut attacks with her super tricks: back somersault tucked, dismount with a front somersault tucked and gets 9.9. One could probably count on the fingers of one hand the instances when such high scores were given for the balance beam. Those 0.1 points put Korbut in first place.

FLOOR EXERCISE. Lazakovich performs her “Hutsulochka” with amazing purity and expressiveness — 9.8 points. Janz gets as many points for a composition that is full of first-class acrobatics, but with rather naive choreography. And Tourischeva, the only double twist performer at the Olympics,* who has played the role of a coquettish girl perfectly, gets the same score. She is one step away from the top step of the podium, which she already climbed two days earlier. Yet, Korbut, that mischievous girl who does amazing tricks on the mat, gets 9.9 points. And we already know that such a score is given to Olympic champions.

[*Note: This is not true. Moore of the USA also did a double full on floor.]

The farewell performance was a great success. The soloists in it were marvelous, and the grateful spectators will remember them for a long time. The only thing that sometimes distracted from this wonderful spectacle was the strange imbalances in the judges’ decisions.

At the press conference after the finals, the President of the International Gymnastics Federation, Mr. A. Gander, and the honorable ladies from the women’s technical committee were literally bombarded with questions about the scores given to Korbut. They immediately took a stand and, defending the honor of the “judges’ uniform,” tried to explain the scandal in the hall by saying that the spectators were sort of biased towards Olga and that not all journalists were experts in gymnastics. And yet we would like to give our opinion.

We highly appreciate the skills of the excellent gymnast K. Janz from the GDR and cannot question in the slightest the legitimacy of her victory on the bars. At the same time, is it correct to evaluate in the same way the routine of one of the gymnasts, which is rather interestingly put together but made up of ordinary elements, with Korbut’s routine, which contains unique elements — a large cast with a 270-degree turn from the upper to the lower bar and a dismount from a crouch on the upper bar with a backward layout somersault?!

To cut a long story short, no matter how zealously the members of the women’s technical committee protect the honor of their uniforms, it is difficult for them to prove that there is complete order and well-being in the judicial world of women’s gymnastics.

Today, most newspapers have harshly criticized the actions of International Federation President A. Gander and the jury of the Olympic gymnastics tournament, who, according to Münchner Merkur, “deliberately persisted during the scandal raised by spectators in protest against the unfair evaluation of O. Korbut’s performance on the bars.” The newspaper recalls that similar injustices to different athletes were shown at the 1962 and 1966 world championships. “Olympic sport should be open in its evaluations, and spectators must know that.” Well, we can join this fair demand of the newspaper, because, perhaps, only in gymnastics do the judges carefully hide their names from the spectators and the public. All attempts by correspondents to find out who made such arbitrary assessments were unsuccessful, because the scores given by one judge or another are kept under lock and key, so to speak.

Commentators on Bavarian television and some reviewers cite a conversation with judge Matlochová from Czechoslovakia, who remarked that she herself had given a higher score, but could not overturn the decision of the judging team.

The sportswomen, of course, have nothing to do with the scandal. They fought honestly, in the spirit of the Olympic rules. They were friends before and their friendship is now even stronger. T. Lazakovich directly told about this at a press conference and on behalf of the Soviet team. K. Janz joined her opinion. The entire Sporthalle saw the moment when Korbut suffered a serious setback. Zuchold was the first person who ran up to her and started to comfort her. The congratulations exchanged by the girls on their way up to the podium were sincere and utterly friendly. This friendship and the aspiration for mutual enrichment will play a significant role in the further progress of women’s gymnastics, which was presented at the Olympics in all its irresistible beauty.

MUNICH, September 1.

Sovetsky Sport, Sept. 2, 1972
