Women didn’t compete at the International Tournament in 1907. (They wouldn’t compete at the World Championships until 1934.) But female gymnasts were part of the Fifth Sokol Rally in 1907.
Let’s take a look at their participation.

At the time, women’s gymnastics was contentious. In France, for example, one of the biggest proponents of French women’s gymnastics was Podesta, and he didn’t think that women should do gymnastics beyond the age of puberty.
One writer struck a different chord in the pages of the Czech publication Sokol. She specifically celebrated adult women doing gymnastics. (Her article used the Czech term for a woman — žena — rather than the term for a girl — holka, dívka, or děvče.) And she called for greater gender equality within the Sokol organization.
What follows is a translation of Anuša Maříková’s article.

A Female Sokol.
2,400 sportswomen flashing blue and white at the meeting in Letna training ground in a single rhythmic, slightly undulating movement as a separate group of Czech women driven by a common idea.
2,400 training women!
The number is truly impressive and inadvertently inspires confidence in a woman’s independence, as if the one thing was needed for us to believe without objection everything that has ever been written, spoken, and done in favor of its realization.
This number acts like a countless crowd. It arouses the respect of the strong and disarms the weak and doubtful.
The 2,400 educated, young female souls cannot be overlooked and they cannot be denied the right to exercise natural demands in our Sokol family. And this right in the Sokol family, I think, must be negotiated as soon as possible, because today’s women’s union is calling for clarification and liberation from uncertainty if the women’s issue in the Sokol is not to run counter to its noble slogans.
Today, women’s unions are a disharmonious chord in the excellent Sokol organization, not only in its composition, but also in the deepened statutes by which they are somehow violently wedged into it. Therefore, it will be necessary to adjust the next paths for the women’s question in Sokol so that a free, independent-thinking and co-creative woman can follow it.
I can’t imagine that today’s woman, with her energy, advanced and progressive, could continue to suffer from male dominance in matters that are their own, even in such a comprehensive whole, in which she appeared at a public exercise during the 5th Rally.
Here the man dictated everything.
He developed exercises, established dance classes and perhaps even gave a directive to change the costume. Everything for women, but without them, as if they were incapable of deciding the things that are most appropriate and closest to them.
The woman did not speak or protest. In a silent resignation, she submitted to the iron discipline of our vast body of nationality, desiring to merge into a single impressive whole that would document a common idea and common work. There was no other effort in it, because there was no time to think or to realize the most natural rights.
The famous days of the 5th Rally were the only harmonic songs that flew across Europe victorious as a hymn to the hardened discipline of Czech man, and few realized that it was redeemed by the renunciation of those who were not allowed to decide independently on issues concerning women in Sokol and her public performance. During this great and famous demonstration, the woman held the same dependent position as the Sokol youth – regardless of the time in which in all other cases the natural right to her independence was worked on.
Only in Sokol was it forgotten. Something that does not compare with free-thinking principles has been done here, something that needs to be thought about, diligently and fruitfully, so that the next meeting shows us a woman in her own creativity, controlled by a woman’s hand, standing free next to a man, with the same idea but independent in speech which would be Investigated and Recognized.
I believe that this omission, which inexorably comes to the fore today, at the end of the last reverberation of the festive days, has caused nothing but the vague position of women’s unions, which are attached to unity without a certain definition of just regulations, without which it is impossible to work happily. Women’s unions, as they are affiliated with the large Sokol organization today, are unsustainable if they are not to remain a stain on the pure shield that far proclaims the freedom and equality of man.
The Czech Union of Sokol has two options left. They must either provide members of women’s unions with the same rights as members of Sokol units, or they must establish separate gym associations with their own administration, subject to the Czech Union of Sokol, but independent of the units.
The elaboration of the women’s issue in Sokol will require a lot of care and many concessions, but it is inevitable to maintain the free-thinking principles of our Sokol idea.

Číslo je opravdu imposantní a bezděčně budí důvěru k osamostatnění ženy, jakoby bylo třeba toho jediného, abychom bez námitek uvěřili všemu, co kdy bylo napsáno, promluveno i učiněno ve prospěch jeho uskutečnění.
Tento určitý počet působí stejně jako bezpočetný dav. Budí respekt silných a odzbrojuje slabé a pochybovačné.
2400 uvědomělých, mladých ženských duší nemožno přehlédnouti a nemožno jim nepřiznati právo k uplatnění přirozených požadavků v rodině našeho Sokolstva. A o toto právo v sokolské rodině, myslím, že se musí jednati co nejdříve, poněvadž dnešní útvar ženských odborů žádá zjasnění a osvobození z neurčita, nemá-li ženská otázka v Sokolstvu býti v rozporu se vznešenými jeho hesly.
Dnes jsou ženské odbory disharmonickým akordem ve výtečné organisaci sokolské, a to nejen svým složením, ale i neprohloubenými stanovami, kterými jsou do ní jaksi. násilně zaklíněny. Proto bude nezbytno upraviti příští cesty pro ženskou otázku v Sokolstvu tak, aby po ní mohla kráčeti žena volná, samostatně myslící a spolutvořící.
Nedovedu si představiti, že by dnešní žena se svou energii, vyspělá a pokroková, mohla i příště trpěti nadvládu muže v otázkách, které rozhoduji jen o ní, a to i v tak obsažném celku, v jakém vystoupila na veřejném cvičení o V. sletu.
Zde diktoval muž všecko.
Vypracoval cvičení, ustanovil taneční reje a dal snad i direktivu ku změně kroje. Všecko pro ženy, ale bez nich, jakoby byly neschopné rozhodovati o věcech nejvlastnějších a jim nejbližších.
Žena se neozvala, ani neprotestovala. Podřídila se v tiché resignaci železné disciplině našeho ohromného tělesa národního, žádostiva splynouti v jediný imponující celek, jenž by dokumentoval společnou ideu a společnou práci. Jiné snahy v ní nebylo, poněvadž nebylo času k úvaze, ani k uvědomění si těch nejpřirozenějších práv.
Slavní dnové V. sletu vyzněli jedinou harmonmickou písní, která proletěla Evropou vítězná jako hymnus zocelené kázně českého člověka a málo kdo si uvědomil, že byla vykoupena odříkáním těch, jimž nebylo dopřáno samostatně rozhodovati o otázkách, týkajících se ženy v Sokolstvu a jejího veřejného vystoupení. Žena při této veliké a slavné manifestaci zaujímala totéž odvislé postavení, jaký zaujímal sokolský dorost — bez ohledu na dobu, v které bylo ve všech jiných případech pracováno o přirozené právo její samostatnosti.
Jen v Sokolstvu se na to zapomnělo. Zde bylo provedeno něco, Co se nesrovnává se svobodomyslnými zásadami, něco, o čem nutno přemýšleti, úsilovně a plodně, aby příští slet předvedl nám ženu ve vlastní tvořivosti, ovládanou ženskou rukou, stojící volně vedle muže, se stejnou ideou, ale samostatnou v projevu, jenž by byl Šetřen a uznáván.
Domnívám se, že toto nedopatření, které dnes, při zániku posledních dozvuků slavnostních dnů, vystupuje neodbytně do popředí, nezavinilo nic jiného, než nejasné postavení ženských odborů, jež přiléhají k jednotám bez určitého vyhranění spravedlivých předpisů, bez nichž nelze radostně pracovati. Ženské odbory, tak jako dnes jsou přičleněny k velké organisaci Sokolstva, jsou neudržitelny, nemají-li zůstati skvrnou na čistém štítě, jenž do daleka hlásá svobodu a rovnost člověka.
České Obci Sokolské zbývají dvě možnosti. Buď musí členům ženských odborů poskytnouti těchže práv, jakých požívají členové sokolských jednot, anebo musí zříditi samostatné spolky tělocvičné s vlastní správou, podléhající sice České Obci Sokolské, ale nezávislé od jednot.
Propracování ženské otázky v Sokolstvu bude vyžadovati mnoho péče a mnoho — ústupků, ale je nevyhnutelné k zachování svobodomyslných zásad našeho Sokolstva.

Women’s Training
On the left side of the training ground, the blue sea of women trainers waves nervously, and above it, heavy, thick clouds darken the whole horizon — as if an impenetrable black curtain had spread over the training ground. Something horrible, terrifying lingers in the air saturated with electricity about to explode.
Meanwhile, on the chief’s bridge, a short internal struggle of the leader is going on. — Women stand ready at the gate. Shall they come in or not? We are obliged to the audience to do as much as possible from the program, throwing away the result of several months of preparations because of the fear of possible rain cannot be done just like that, again for the sake of the practitioners themselves, it seems that the storm is moving away. It is not possible to waste time in long deliberations. In the firm hope that before the storm blows over the exercises will be over, the signal is given to enter. — Thinned stands salute the brave girls. Brother Kmoch plays to their march, but in the roar of the wind and the noise of the audience leaving the stands the music sometimes ceases altogether. The occasional thunder drowns out all sound on the practice ground altogether. Clouds of dust roll in front of the marching girls. The storm is here at once with frightening speed. In a moment the drill ground is darkened and we see our girls performing the formation in the darkness and in the dust. At times the lightning illuminates the whole strange spectacle. We see that it is bad; but there is no stopping it, they must come up to the distance. — And indeed they came up to the three-stage streams, they spread out to circle, and just as they were about to perform the first troop, a terrible storm with a cloudburst threw a whole lot of water on the poor drill-girls. And they stood and stood — not moving, disappearing from our sight in the watery mist. Several times the leader signals for them to move away, and at last, they are spotted the signals, and they fall into a three-step formation, and walk off, terribly destroyed, across the streams and mud, mostly in an orderly fashion to the changing rooms. This bravery of the Sokol women’s union made the name of Czech women famous throughout Europe. By their bravery, the girls prevented panic among the audience and certainly many injuries in the crowd. Their calmness in the midst of the fierce storm had a soothing effect on the fleeing audience, who, at the sight of them, became ashamed and avoided reckless rashness. The magazines the next day admired the doom of the audience, who left their places without accident. — There would have been dozens trampled on a similar occasion. — But I say it was the girls, to whose credit it is that no more happened.

The fleeing crowd had also hidden in their dressing-rooms, had torn down the clothes that were hanging there in the crowd, and — trampled them down. Then the first cry was heard, and when our Moravian girls saw their national costumes in the mud, no wonder they wept.
The members were spared from the worst calamity. They took refuge in the dressing-rooms, and, in spite of the water pouring down on them from above and below, they did not lose their good spirits. — At one moment the thunder strikes near the dressing-rooms, till the dirt flies high, and at that moment the drill-master standing by throws a somersault over the engraved pit, and is followed by the others. The members were spared from the worst calamity. They took refuge in the dressing-rooms, and, in spite of the water pouring down on them from above and below, they did not lose their good spirits. — At one moment the thunder strikes near the dressing-rooms, till the dirt flies high, and at that moment the drill-master standing by throws a somersault over the engraved pit, and is followed by the others. But when the members see that the day is already lost, then defiance rises up in them at once, and they hurl their enthusiasm in the face of the raging storm in the Slavic hymn “thunder and hell are vain against us are rage…” In a moment the melancholy national anthem “Where is my home” [the current national anthem of the Czech Republic] and the Sokol “Lion’s strength.”
The true soul of the Sokol has spoken — “I will not be broken” and the Sokol idea celebrated a new victory. After about an hour the rain stopped. The exercise ground and the marshaling yard were flooded with water and provided a picture of lakes in which the trainees walked on their hands to avoid getting their shoes wet. The remnants of the wet audience left Letná. The first day had a bad ending. — Perhaps tomorrow will be better, we consoled ourselves.
CVIČENÍ ŽEN.

Na můstku náčelnickém zatím odehrává se krátký vnitřní boj vedoucího. — Ženy stojí připraveny V bráně. Mají nastoupiti či ne? Vůči obecenstvu jsme přece povinní provésti z programu sletu co — nejvíce, zahoditi z obav před možným deštěm výsledek několikaměsíčních příprav také nelze jen tak učiniti, již zase k vůli cvičenkám samým, nad to zdá se, že bouře se žene stranou. Nelze ztráceti času dlouhými úvahami. V pevné naději, že prve než bouře přikvačí, cvičení se odbude, dává se znamení ku vstupu. — Prořidlé tribuny pozdravují statečné dívky. Bratr Kmoch hraje sice jim do pochodu, ale v hukotu větru a v hluku odcházejícího obecenstva z tribun zaniká chvílemi hudba zcela. Občasné zahřmění zahlušuje veškerý zvuk na cvičišti vůbec. Mraky prachu válí se před kráčejícími dívkami. Bouře pojednou s děsnou rychlostí je tu. V mžiku se zatmí cvičiště a vidíme, jak dívky naše v této tmě a v kotoučích prachu provádějí nástupovou rej. Chvílemi blesk osvítí celé podivné divadlo. Vidíme, že je zle; ale zastaviti se nedá nic, musí dojíti až do rozstupu. — A skutečně došly až do trojstupových proudů, rozestouply se ku kroužení, a právě když chystaly se provésti první oddíl, strašlivá bouře s průtrží mračen vychrlila celé spousty vody na ubohé cvičenky. A ony stály a stály — ani se nehýbajíce, mizíce nám ve vodní mlze s očí. Několikrát dává vůdce znamení k odstupu, konečně je postřehnou, srážejí se do trojstupů a odcházejí strašně zřízeny přes potoky a bahniny většinou spořádaně do šaten. Několik zadních nevolilo cestu sestupu a prchalo do šaten přímo. — Při nejkrutší bouři za třesku hromu, který několikrát udeřil do samého cvičiště a seřadiště vytrvaly statečně, dík sokolské kázní a domluvám svých vedoucích. Tato statečnost ženských odborů sokolských proslavila jméno české ženy po celé Evropě. Svojí statečností zabránily dívky panice mezi obecenstvem a jistě mnohému úrazu v tlačenici. Jejich klid uprostřed divé bouře působil konejšivě na prchající obecenstvo, které pohledem na ně zastydělo se a vyvarovalo bezhlavých ukvapeností. Časopisy na druhý den obdivovaly zkázněnost obecenstva, které opustilo svá místa bez nehody. — Jinde by prý při podobné příležitosti byly desítky ušlapaných. — Já praví však, že dívky to byly, jimž patří zásluha, že se nestalo více.
V šatnách očekávala zatím dívky nová pohroma. Prchající obecenstvo ukrylo se také do jejich šaten, strhalo v tlačenici rozvěšené tam šaty — a pošlapalo. Tu ozval se první nářek a když viděly naše Moravanky i své národní kroje v blátě, nedivte se, že zaplakaly.
Členstvo bylo od nejhorší pohromy ušetřeno. Ukrylo se do šaten, a přes to, že příval vody ze shora i ze spoda na ně dorážel, neztratilo na dobré mysli. — V jednu chvíli hrom udeří nedaleko šaten, až hlína lítá do výše, a v tu chvíli již blízko stojící cvičenec saltem se přenese přes vyrytou jámu a za ním druzí. Když však členstvo vidělo, že ten den jest již ztracen, tu vzdor zdvihl se pojednou v nich a zuřící bouři metají v tvář své nadšení v slovanskou hymnu “hrom a peklo marné vaše proti nám jsou vzteky…” Za chvíli zní již tklivá národní hymna “Kde domov můj” a sokolská “Lví silou.”
To ozvala se pravá duše sokolská — “nedám se zlomiti” a nové vítězství slavila sokolská idea. Asi po hodině déšt ustál. Cvičiště a seřadiště zaplaveny vodou a poskytovaly obraz jezer, ve kterých chodili cvičenci po rukou, aby si nenamáčeli boty. Zbytky zmoklého obecenstva opouštěly Letnou. První den měl špatné zakončení. — Snad zítra bude lépe, utěšovali jsme se.
