1970: A Conflicted Portrait of Karin Janz

From 1956 until 1962, Larisa Latynina dominated the all-around at the major international gymnastics competitions. Then, it was Věra Čáslavská’s turn, and she won the major all-around titles from 1964 until 1968.

Once Čáslavská retired from the sport, there was a power vacuum. The title of the world’s best female gymnast was up for grabs. Who would win the all-around title in 1970? Would it be Karin Janz, who won the all-around at the European Championships in 1969?

The gymnastics world had its reservations about Karin Janz. Sure, she had tremendous difficulty, but she lacked “femininity and softness.” Words like “machine” and “mechanical” were often used to describe her gymnastics.

The following profile of Janz, printed in the Czechoslovak magazine Stadión before the 1970 World Championships, summarizes many conflicted sentiments about the East German teenager.

At the 1967 European Championships in Amsterdam, GDR trainer Ellen Berger brought an inconspicuous little person, but she attracted attention during training. Even more after the championships, Karin Janz, 15, brought back from her first trip to the big gymnastics world a silver medal for the uneven bars, a bronze for the vault, and diplomas for fourth place in the all-around and on balance beam.

She delighted in collecting these souvenirs. From the Olympic Games in Mexico, she has again in her collection a silver medal for the uneven bars and a bronze medal for the team’s third place. To top it all off, she went to Landskrona, Sweden last year, where she added to her gold medals as European champion in the all-around, vault, uneven bars and balance beam, and silver in the floor exercise… She was thus stamped the best of the best in Europe.

WHIRLED SURFACE – There were those who admired her performance. A Dutch journalist wrote: “Little Karin laughed at the highest difficulty.” French L’Équipe stamped her with the seal of “gymnast of tomorrow” and predicted a long unbeatable run. Soviet Sport praised the carelessness of “the girl with the cheeky nose” who wins her fights without respect for the size and experience of her opponents.

However, there were also those who could not accept the fact that after the gymnastic queens like Latynina and Čáslavská, a gymnast of a completely different type had ascended the throne. Erika Zuchold, the “longest-serving” athlete from the GDR, said of her compatriot: “Karin has beautiful tumbling passes, but she lacks execution and expression.” Czechoslovak coach Luděk Martschini bows to acrobatic perfection, but… “Karin trains too hard, everything is choppy and tight, she lacks femininity and softness.” America’s best gymnast Cathy Rigby says of Europe’s best:

“Janz has one difficulty after another in her exercise, but it’s an exercise without spark.”

Karin makes no bones about the talk of either. That’s part of the sovereign attitude.

I RELY ON MYSELF • In Landskrona, the European champion talked about the seven years of hard training that preceded her conquest of the title. She was asked, “So is seven a lucky number for you?” Karin answered without hesitation, “I don’t believe in luck or bad luck. I rely on myself. Because if you want to win, you have to be better than the others!”

Karin doesn’t have this wisdom from herself, she just confirms it with her performances. It was instilled in her daughter from the cradle by Guido Janz, a high school professor of physical education and physics, himself a former gymnast. Her proud father recognized his daughter’s talent for movement early on and began to train her systematically, perhaps even before she could walk. Karin always stresses her father’s merit: “Dad said that only those who start early will be able to go far in gymnastics.” At the entrance exam for the gymnastics department, ten-year-old Karin had the audience in awe when she performed a back handspring from a standing position as her first demonstration.

STRAIGHT TO THE TOP • From Cottbus, the 14-year-old has gone into the care of state coaches at the GDR’s star club, SC Dynamo Berlin. She didn’t show up empty-handed. Before that, she drew attention to herself at the international junior competitions in Erfurt, where she was only beaten by Natasha Kuchinskaya by a tenth of a point in the optional all-around. A year later followed Amsterdam, two years later Mexico, three years later Landskrona. Since 1967, she has also held first place in the GDR gymnastics tables. Is it a miracle? Not to anyone who knows her. Her first coach, Klaus Helbeck, gives a testimony about her:

“Karin has a talent for movment that is rarely seen. In addition, she is tenacious, precise, and disciplined. Her main weapons are her extraordinary ambition and ability to mentally focus, so important in this particular sport.”

MOVEMENT RIVER • This is perhaps the only soaring attribute that can be used in Karin Janz. A bit poor, unlike the celebratory adjectives with which her predecessors were showered. The girl, 155 cm tall, 45 kg light, with sober grey-green eyes, short ash-flowing hair, with a slim boyish figure, does not yet attract any male eye. But the eyes of the experts are all the more keen. There is no defect in her exercise, perhaps there cannot be. For Karin, the above-average ability to control her body is only a matter of technique. She comes to the apparatus and exercises with even the most difficult elements as easily as if she were a well-tuned machine. In vain, the judges look for mistakes for which they could deduct tenths of points. In vain, however, the spectators so far have looked for more than technical perfection.

In Ljubljana, Karin will be one of the most serious favorites for the World Championships in October, Will she win or not? The one who wants to beat her will have to train as perfectly as she does and also gild this movement river with girlish charm.

[Note: She was leading until the final rotation when she crashed her beam dismount.]

Holandský novinář napsal: „Malá Karin se vysmála nejvyšší obtížnosti,“ Francouzský l’Équipe jí vtiskl pečeť „gymnastka zítřka“ a předpověděl dlouhou neporazitelnost.

I to patří k suverénnímu postoji.

KOLMO K VRCHOLU • Z Cottbusu přešla čtrnáctiletá žákyně do péče státních trenérů v klubu hvězd NDR, v SC Dynamo Berlin.

K hlavním jejím zbraním patří mimořádná ctižádostivost a schopnost duševního soustředění, tak důležitého právě u tohoto sportu.“

POHYBOVÁ ŘEKA • To je snad jediný vzletný atribut, kterého je možno u Karin Janzové použít. Trochu chudé no rozdíl od oslavných přívlastků, jimiž byly zahrnovány její předchůdkyně.
