1971: The East Germans Defeat the North Koreans

North Korea was supposed to participate in the 1970 World Championships, but the team did not show. So, prior to the Munich Olympics, the gymnastics world did not know much about North Korean gymnasts. A 1971 dual meet with East Germany was one of the DPRK’s few international appearances.

What follows are the results and an article about the competition. Reportedly, Kim Song Zu performed a triple twist off rings.

GDR beat DPRK with 542,55 : 539,45 points

Three victories for Li Song Sob during the apparatus finals

With 542.53 : 539.45 points, the gymnasts of the GDR kept the upper hand in the first official international competition with the Korean People’s Democratic Republic in Gera. Klaus Köste scored 110.50 points, beating the three-time Korean champion Li Song Sob (109.95) and Matthias Brehme (109.35) from Leipzig, who was competing in Gera for the first time after a long injury break. On the second day of the final competitions of the dual meet between the GDR and the DPRK, the Korean Li Song Sob took first place three times.

The 21-year-old gymnast from Pyongyang won on rings and also kept the upper hand on parallel bars and high bar. With 9.55 points on the rings, Li Song Sob also provided the highest score of the event finals. The other first-place finishes went to the GDR gymnasts. Matthias Brehme won the floor exercise and the vault. Jürgen Paeke proved to be the best gymnast on the pommel horse. All-around winner Klaus Köste was unable to compete here due to a severe cold.

The highlights of the national competition with these interesting rivals were in the optionals. The protégés of the frequent GDR champion Siegfried Fülle, who coached the GDR gymnasts during the competition, were only half a point ahead after the compulsories but extended their lead in the optionals to over three points. Only on parallel bars, the guests received a better team score. In compulsories, the DPRK squad had still proven to be the stronger team on three apparatus (rings, parallel bars, high bar). “We cannot yet be satisfied with the compulsory performances shown, but in the optionals, on the other hand, they already performed quite decently,” said Siegfried Fülle.

Despite a severe cold, the 28-year-old Klaus Köste was once again the outstanding gymnast on the GDR team. For the high bar routine, with which he had become European champion half a year ago, he received 9.60 points in Gera, the highest score of the international competition. Matthias Brehme, who is the same age, understandably still showed some shortcomings in his compulsory routine (side horse, parallel bars), but showed himself from his best side in the “optional” program and, together with Klaus Köste (56.05 each), was even the best gymnast in the optional program. Brehme presented the Tsukahara on vault, was one of the seven gymnasts who performed a double somersault off the rings, and finished his parallel bars routine with a full twist. The other GDR gymnasts followed at a fair distance, but especially Jürgen Paeke, Joachim Rühle, and Bernd Jäger can be expected to stabilize their performances already in the coming months.

The guests will already be noticed at the 1972 Olympic Games. They presented themselves in Gera with an extremely difficult program; on floor, Kim Song Il showed a double somersault, and on the rings Kim Song Zu presented a triple twist. Their weakest point at the moment is still the vault, because here only substitute gymnast So Kwang had an original vault to offer with the handspring with one and a half somersault.* While Klaus Köste and Joachim Rühle stood up the same vault, the courage of the Korean was not yet rewarded. On the other hand, the men around Li Song Sob showed themselves as excellent gymnasts on parallel bars and also had international-class performances to offer on the rings.

The strongest performance of the guests on the second day in the final competitions was again on parallel bars, where they took the first four places. Especially Kim Song Il impressed with a double somersault as a dismount. On high bar, Bernd Jäger achieved the second-highest score of the final competition with 9.50 points. He finished his routine with a full-twisting salto.

Drei Siege für Ri Song Sob beim Gerätefinale
 
Mit 542,53:539,45 Punkten behielten die Turner-der DDR in Gera im ersten offiziellen Länderkampf mit der Koreanischen Volksdemokratischen Republik die Oberhand, Auch in der Einzelwertung des Zwölfkampfes ging der Sieg an einen DDR-Turner. Klaus Köste kam auf 110,50 Punkte und verwies damit den dreifachen koreanischen Meister Ri Song Sob (109,95) sowie den Leipziger Matthias Brehme (109,35), der nach einer längeren Verletzungspause in Gera seinen ersten Wettkampf bestritt, auf die Plätze. Am zweiten Tage bei den abschließenden Finalwettbewerben des Turnvergleichskampfes zwischen der DDR und der KVDR belegte der Koreaner Ri Song Sob gleich dreimal den ersten Rang.
 
Der 21jährige Turner aus Phöngjang gewann an den Ringen und behielt auch am Barren und am Reck die Oberhand. Mit 9,55 Punkten an den Ringen sorgte Ri Song Sob gleichzeitig für den höchsten Wert der Finalwettkämpfe. Die anderen ersten Plätze fielen an die DDR-Turner. Matthias Brehme siegte im Bodenturnen und im Pferdsprung. Am Seitpferd erwies sich Jürgen Paeke als der beste Turner. Mehrkampfsieger Klaus Köste konnte wegen einer starken Erkältung hier nicht mehr an den Start gehen.
 
Die Höhepunkte des Länderkampfes mit diesen interessanten Rivalen lagen in der Kür. Die Schützlinge des oftmaligen DDR-Meisters Siegfried Fülle, der die DDR-Turner während des Wettkampfes betreute, befanden sich nach der Pflicht nur mit einem halben Punkt im Vorteil, dehnten jedoch den Vorsprung im Kürprogramm auf über drei Punkte aus. Nur am Barren erhielten “die Gäste eine bessere Mannschaftsnote. In der Pflicht hatte sich die KVDR-Riege noch an drei Geräten (Ringe, Barren, Reck) als die stärkere Mannschaft erwiesen. „Mit den gezeigten Pflichtleistungen kann man noch nicht zufrieden sein, in der Kür wurde dagegen bereits recht ordentlich geturnt“, sagte Siegfried Fülle,
 
Ueberragender Turner in der DDR-Mannschaft war trotz einer starken Erkältung einmal mehr der 28 Jahre alte Klaus Köste. Für die Reck-Kür, mit der er vor einem halben Jahr Europameister geworden war, erhielt er in Gera mit 9,60 Punkten, die höchste Wertung des Länderkampfes. Der gleichaltrige Matthias Brehme offenbarte verständlicherweise noch einige Pflicht-Lücken (Seitpferd, Barren), zeigte sich jedoch im „freien“ Programm von der besten Seite und war zusammen mit Klaus Köste (je 56,05) sogar der beste Kürturner. Brehme präsentierte im Pferdsprung den Tsukahara, war an den Ringen einer der sieben Turner, die den Doppelsalto zeigten, und beendete seine Barren-Kür mit der Mühle. Die anderen DDR-Turner folgten zwar in gebührenden Abstand, doch dürfte vor allem bei Jürgen Paeke, Joachim Rühle und Bernd Jäger schon in den kommenden Monaten eine Stabilisierung der Leistungen erwartet werden.
 
Die Gäste werden schon bei den Olympischen Spielen 1972 zu beachten sein. Sie stellten sich in Gera mit einem äußerst schwierigen Programm vor, auf der Bodenmatte zeigte Kim Song Il den Doppelsalto, und an den Ringen präsentierte Kim Song Zu die dreifache Mühle. Ihr schwächster Punkt ist gegenwärtig noch der Pferdsprung, denn hier hatte nur Ersatzturner So Kwang mit dem Ueberschlag mit eineinhalbfachem Salto einen originellen Sprung anzubieten, Während Klaus Köste und Joachim Rühle, den gleichen Sprung standen, wurde der Mut des Koreaners noch nicht belohnt. Dafür zeigten sich die Männer um Ri Song Sob als exzellente Barrenturner und hatten auch an den Ringen internationale Klasseleistungen anzubieten.
 
Am stärksten setzten sich die Gäste am zweiten Tag bei den Finalwettbewerben erneut am Barren in Szene, wo sie die vier ersten Plätze belegten. Hier imponierte vor allem Kim Song Il mit dem Doppelsalto als Abgang. Am Reck sorgte Bernd Jäger mit 9,50 Punkten für die zweithöchste Note des Finalweitkampfes. Er beendete seine Uebung mit der Mühle und dem anschließenden Salto.
