Valeri Liukin: The Triple Back and the Temptation to Quit

Valeri Liukin emerged as one of the Soviet Union’s leading gymnasts in 1987. During the first half of the year, he won the European and USSR all-around titles and established himself as a contender for the World Championships. His breakthrough coincided with one of the sport’s defining moments of the decade: the successful introduction of the triple back on floor exercise, a feat that immediately secured his place in gymnastics history.

The three articles translated here capture Liukin at that turning point. Rather than looking back from the perspective of his later career—or of his daughter Nastia’s Olympic success—they present him as contemporaries saw him in 1987: a fearless young gymnast from Kazakhstan whose daring, technical innovation, and close partnership with coach Eduard Yarov had made him one of the Soviet Union’s brightest stars. Together, they trace the development of the triple salto, explore the coach-athlete relationship behind his success, and reveal the expectations surrounding his first World Championships in Rotterdam—along with his repeated flirtation with quitting the sport.

Note: For more on the triple back salto, see the appendix in this post.

The Rise of Valeri Liukin

A Profile of Kazakhstan’s Athletes

Alma-Ata’s Valeri Liukin won the title of USSR All-Around Champion in Chelyabinsk. KazTAG correspondent V. Evdokimov tells the story of how he reached that success.

“The men’s gymnastics program in Kazakhstan had been waiting a long time for this breakthrough—more than twenty years. Not since Yuri Tsapenko won three medals at the 1963 Soviet Championships, followed the next year by an Olympic bronze on pommel horse and a team silver medal, had there been such a success. Later, women’s gymnastics produced the incomparable Nellie Kim and Natalia Ilienko, but the men remained quietly in the background.

Then, almost overnight, everything changed.

Valeri Liukin’s meteoric rise began at the Goodwill Games in Moscow, where he won the vault title and also earned a team gold medal with the Soviet national team. But what happened this year astonished everyone—specialists and spectators alike, including those attending the Moscow News International Tournament. Liukin dominated across the board: he won the all-around competition, then captured titles on three apparatus, and on high bar, he finished only one-tenth of a point behind Kim Chol Nam of North Korea.

Most important of all was this: Liukin entered the history of world gymnastics as the first gymnast to perform a triple salto on floor exercise.

It was an unequivocal triumph.

Launching himself with only a three-step run-up and soaring high into the air, he executed this almost cosmic rotation with such ease that it seemed as though he were weightless.

Who, then, is this twenty-year-old young man who has raised the prestige of our gymnastics to such heights, inscribing the triple salto into the history of the sport as the ‘Liukin Salto’?

People in Kazakhstan noticed him ten years earlier. The young gymnast represented the Aktyubinsk Region under the guidance of his first coach, Y. N. Gorelnikov, now an Honored Coach of the Kazakh SSR. He was spotted and invited to study at the sports boarding school in Alma-Ata. But the fourth-grader had a stubborn streak, and after a year he returned home, leaving his new coach, V. V. Frolov, disappointed.

Around that time, a young coach named Edige Nikolayevich Yarov arrived in Aktyubinsk [now Aktobe]. From then on, Liukin’s sporting career became inseparable from Yarov. It was Yarov who was destined to develop the gymnast into a champion.

Yarov himself never reached the highest levels as an athlete, ending his competitive career as a Candidate for Master of Sport. Nevertheless, he always spoke with gratitude of his own coaches, A. G. Klish and E. G. Silivanov. It was from them—not from the institute—that he learned both a love for gymnastics and the art of coaching.

Speaking of Kazakhstan’s success in gymnastics, one should also mention another athlete from Alma-Ata—Vladimir Novikov, who performed superbly on rings at the 14th Moscow News International Tournament. Together with Liukin, he is scheduled to tour cities across the United States as a member of the Soviet national team, and in May, he will also compete at the European Championships in Moscow.

Valeri Liukin: We Make Our Own Miracles

At the European Gymnastics Championships, Valeri Liukin captivated the spectators with his mastery and the journalists with his charm. At every press conference, my colleagues eagerly clustered around this good-natured and courageous young man.

Yes, courageous. Not every young athlete can answer the probing questions of persistent reporters with such ease, such confidence, and such heartfelt sincerity. One wanted to talk with Liukin endlessly. One wanted to know every detail of his remarkable rise, to understand how he lived, what inspired him, what made this approachable young man who he was.

What I saw in him was openness and trustfulness. Those qualities naturally draw people in. And when I met his coach, Eduard Nikolayevich Yarov, I immediately realized how remarkably alike the two of them were—coach and pupil alike: cheerful, open, yet prickly and stubborn. Two genuinely strong-willed people.

Tell me, what compelled Yarov to throw together his belongings and rush to Aktyubinsk after young Valeri Liukin, who had bolted from Alma-Ata? Liukin, then a fifth-grader, had been warmly invited to attend the capital’s sports boarding school, yet after only a year, he simply ran away home. There, in Aktyubinsk, Yarov patiently and stubbornly convinced the headstrong boy that he had to return, that things would be different this time. He persuaded him. He brought him back.

What was it? Extraordinary coaching intuition? How could a young coach, fresh out of the Institute of Physical Culture, possess such insight? Yes, intuition—a kind of inspiration.

Years ago, I asked Anatoly Yarmovsky why he had taken the tearful Sasha Dityatin into his group after another coach had dismissed him. I asked Gennady Korshunov why he had accepted Lena Davydova, whom even the great “maestro” Yuri Shtukman had rejected as unfit for a specialized sports school. Neither could give a precise answer. There is something in human decisions that simply defies logic.

Yet Yarov displayed an iron logic when Liukin, then in the ninth grade and already qualified as a Master of Sport, suddenly decided to quit gymnastics once again. Valeri had become disappointed in himself and in his coach. He could no longer endure the constant arguments and the natural pressure of high-level training. He questioned the direction of his development and no longer saw any prospects for improvement.

Eduard Nikolayevich said firmly, “You’ll come back. You won’t be able to live without gymnastics. It’s inside you. It’s in your heart.”

Liukin did come back.

He returned a different person—not more compliant, nor with his head hanging low. He returned to forge himself into an Athlete, to create his own unique “Liukin gymnastics.”

Liukin gymnastics…

What is this “phenomenon”?

To me, it is complete, absolute freedom of movement on the apparatus, without the slightest trace of caution; the greatest possible amplitude in every movement, every flight, every release, every salto.

Valeri’s performance is, in essence, a reflection of his character. There is still a boyish spirit inside him, a carefree daring, an “all or nothing” attitude. And we love that so much that it takes our breath away. It makes us want to return—if only for a minute, if only for a moment—to our own youth.

Liukin’s gymnastics is, of course, also the triple salto, which has transformed our understanding of what a gymnast is capable of.

Can you imagine what it means to perform a triple salto on the tiny “patch” of a gymnastics floor?

Acrobats have performed triple somersaults for many years—in various forms, even with twists, after long tumbling combinations. But they do so on a long, springy tumbling track. To soar high into the air and generate that tightly wound spring of rotation requires the same kind of approach speed as a long jumper—roughly seven meters of full-speed running.

That is how they worked toward this once-unattainable triple: first the tumbling track, then the foam pit, then shorter and shorter run-ups, ever more explosive takeoffs.

Ten steps.

Five.

Three.

At last—

Go!

Liukin remembered that day for the rest of his life—as if it were his birthday. In a sense, it truly was the birth of a gymnast.

It was December 19, 1986. Just two days after his twentieth birthday, Liukin did a triple salto on the floor exercise mat for the first time rather than on the tumbling strip. Everyone in the gym stopped training. Everyone waited.

They waited for a miracle.

And the miracle happened.

Cheers. Shouts. Exhaustion…

That single minute left him utterly drained. Was he afraid? Of course, he was. He sat down on a bench. His knees trembled from the tremendous strain.

It will pass, he told himself. It will pass.

The important thing is this: We make our own miracles.

They left him alone for a while. A smile lingered on his face. What was he thinking about then? Perhaps about his childhood in Aktyubinsk, about the day he learned that his older brother Sasha had decided to join a gymnastics club but absolutely refused to take little Valeri along. The crafty younger brother secretly followed him and suddenly appeared before coach Yuri Nikolayevich Gorelnikov, much to Sasha’s surprise and annoyance. Both boys were accepted into the gymnastics section at the Palace of Pioneers.

And on that December 19, Liukin still had no idea that only three months later, on March 27, 1987, a packed Olimpiysky Sports Complex would rise to applaud him—for the astonishing beauty and precision of his triple salto, for his spirit of exploration, his daring, and his attempt to cross the boundary into the unknown and mysterious.

It was his first major international triumph, at the Moscow News International Tournament.

Only afterward did people begin recalling that he had outperformed everyone on vault at the Goodwill Games and had finished second at the Riga ’86 tournament. They also remembered how, back in 196[3], the dark-haired Alma-Ata gymnast Yuri Tsapenko had suddenly captured three gold medals at the Soviet Championships, astonishing even Boris Shakhlin, Yuri Titov, and Viktor Lisitsky. Now, twenty-six years later, another representative of the Kazakh school of gymnastics had produced a similarly explosive breakthrough.

Even today, one vividly remembers the thrilling duel between Valeri Liukin and Valentin Mogilny at the Soviet Championships in Chelyabinsk that April. Mogilny was in magnificent form and came closer than ever to winning the all-around title, dazzling everyone with the exquisite precision of every movement. But he made the slightest mistake on vault.

Liukin made none.

For three-time world champion Mogilny, the ideal gymnast was Boris Shakhlin, whom he had never seen compete but about whom he had read extensively and chosen to emulate. Liukin’s model was Nikolai Andrianov, another fearless, stubborn competitor cut from much the same cloth.

A month later Liukin launched another assault—this time on the established stars. In the USSR-USA dual meet across the ocean, he defeated Yuri Korolev, Valentin Mogilny, and the rest of the field.

Was he now the leader of the Soviet team?

The question remained unanswered until the European Championships in Moscow.

Where does this stability of his come from — nerves made of rope, or what? No, actually, he’s just an ordinary guy. That morning, he warmed up, then tried to get some sleep; it didn’t work, he was too keyed up. After the victory, he admitted: “I’m very tired, I really want to sleep.”

Beyond gymnastics, Valeri is an enthusiastic, adventurous person. His friend Pavel Kurenkov taught him to ski, and Yarov—who had also skied the slopes of Chimbulak—believes (whether jokingly or seriously) that Liukin could have become an outstanding alpine skier, the kind of leader the Soviet national team still lacked.

And yet, why is this new European all-around champion, the Dynamo athlete from Alma-Ata and student at the Institute of Physical Culture, so appealing to us? Why did he win us over? Why do we believe in him—and in his brilliant future?

Let me answer with the words of Yuri Korolev, Komsomol organizer of the Soviet national team: “Valeri Liukin is a dependable teammate, and that’s what matters most.”

Yes.

That is what matters most in life.

Valeri Liukin: “I Believe in My Coach”

It is tempting to begin a story about Valeri Liukin with the words “he burst onto the scene.” From the outside, that really is how it seems. In a single year on the Soviet national team, the Dynamo gymnast from Alma-Ata created such a stir, won so many medals, and earned so many glowing descriptions that one almost has to begin that way: “He burst onto the national team.”

“Valeri burst onto the scene?” Eduard Nikolayevich Yarov, Liukin’s coach, asked in surprise. “Not at all. At the 1986 Goodwill Games he was entered as the sixth—our last competitor on the team. His task was as ordinary as could be: don’t have a major break, don’t fall.

“That’s how things work in gymnastics. The team’s sixth member goes first on each apparatus. Every ‘sixth man’ has only one objective—to set the tone for the competition and calm the leaders before their main battles. We honestly expected to finish sixth, just as the ‘tickets had already been bought,’ but Liukin wound up fourth—and even won the gold medal on vault.”

Or perhaps he really did burst onto the scene?

On December 19 of that same year, Valeri performed a triple salto on floor exercise for the first time in his life during practice. Then, just three months later, at the March 1987 international tournament in Moscow, he unveiled the unique element in competition. Victories in the USSR–USA dual meet, the Soviet Championships, the European Championships, and a recent second-place finish in the USSR Cup—all of that came within the span of only five or six months.

Still, one can understand Yarov’s point of view. Had he begun coaching Liukin only two years earlier, he too might have agreed that Liukin had “burst onto the scene.” But Yarov knows the value of time.

Eduard Nikolayevich first saw Valera Liukin in 1978. The schoolboy from Aktyubinsk was then competing under the First-Class standard. The young coach was struck by the boy’s extraordinary coordination and a certain lightness in the way he performed his routines. Lightness—that meant a feel for the air, or more precisely, a feel for himself while in the air.

The coach also noticed what the boy still needed to improve.

Or maybe he’d get lucky with this boy?

Yarov dropped everything and traveled to Aktyubinsk to see Yuri Nikolayevich Gorelnikov, Liukin’s coach, and Valeri’s mother. He spent a long time persuading them to let the young gymnast move to Alma-Ata. And when he finally brought him there, he refused to send him to a sports boarding school. Instead, he kept him in his own home.

From 1978 until 1986, they lived together in the same apartment. By the time Valeri left Yarov’s hospitable home, he was already an International Master of Sport and a member of the Soviet national team.

A great deal happened during those years.

In 1984, Valera became completely discouraged and decided to quit gymnastics. Once again, however, he yielded to his coach’s arguments that his abilities had not yet been fully realized.

And what about the coach’s own abilities? Had he been mistaken in seeing a future champion in a First-Class gymnast?

At first, everything seemed carefully thought out. He brought Liukin into his training group and spent a year correcting countless technical flaws.

“I was completely ready to go home then,” Liukin recalls. “But something stopped me. By then, I had already won the School Spartakiad in Tashkent and was a member of the Soviet junior national team. It’s true; I almost turned back halfway. But, as you can see, I stayed.”

In photographs, Valeri looks sturdier than he does in real life. In person he still looks like a teenager, nothing more—though broader in the shoulders than most, with arms that are unmistakably those of a gymnast.

He had come to Alma-Ata for only a few days, yet immediately settled into the routine and schedule. Even while talking, he kept glancing at his watch.

Practice would begin soon.

“Valeri, is it true that you donated one of your medals to the museum of the military unit where you’re serving?”

“Yes, the silver medal from the European Championships.”

There was something unmistakably confident about the way he answered.

To give away a European Championship medal… One has to believe deeply in oneself to regard such a medal as merely a stepping stone.

Yet that confidence remained internal. Asked about the upcoming World Championships and even the 1988 Olympics, Liukin spoke cautiously, using phrases like “I’d like to…” and “I’ll try…”

Yarov was more direct.

“Of course, we have plans. But I don’t like planning medals. I never set that kind of goal for Valera. Whatever the level of the competition, I simply ask him to perform every routine the way he knows he can—the way he performs it in the very best moments of our work together.”

Champion of the Soviet Union. Champion of Europe.

In October, in the Netherlands, Liukin would compete in his first World Championships.

It seemed appropriate to ask Yarov about the Asian school of artistic gymnastics. Wouldn’t the European champion’s chances be diminished once the Chinese and Japanese gymnasts entered the competition?

“Frankly, the leading contenders for the world all-around title will be flying to Rotterdam on the same airplane as Liukin,” Yarov replied. “It’s harder to beat Soviet gymnasts than competitors from any other country. My prediction is this: the battle for the world championship will come down to our Dmitry Bilozerchev, Yuri Korolev, Valeri Liukin, and China’s Li Ning.”

These are exciting times for men’s gymnastics in Kazakhstan.

Under coach Vladimir Ufimtsev, Vladimir Novikov has developed to the level of the national team and, incidentally, has been named our sixth competitor for the World Championships in Rotterdam. Igor Golev, coached by Viktor Frolov, has also been invited to the Soviet national team.

And then there is the Yarov–Liukin partnership.

Perhaps the greatest challenge Yarov faced was protecting his athlete from the temptations of sudden fame.

“It was incredible. During our trip to the United States, we encountered the most blatant athlete personality cult imaginable. In big cities and small towns alike, people came specifically to see Liukin. They demanded encores. They shouted and stomped their feet whenever Valera stayed off the competition floor too long. The reception was the same in West Germany and other countries.

“You know, it seemed to me that Valera quickly realized he was the center of attention. A slight trace appeared in his character—not exactly arrogance, but something close to it. I never reproached him, not by word or by look. I wanted him to figure it out for himself.”

It did not take long.

Valera soon understood the situation. On the Soviet national team, there are outstanding people—true friends—and alongside that, there is constant, healthy competition.

When you put those together, it becomes clear that modesty, humanity, and hard work are the qualities that matter most in an athlete.

Liukin, it seems, is immune to “star disease.”

Appendix: Liukin and the 1992 Olympics

Many have wondered why Liukin did not compete at the 1992 Olympics after finishing third in the all-around at the 1991 World Championships. The answer appears to lie in his departure for the United States, where he sought a better future for his daughter.

GOLDEN BOYS, GIRLS IN BROCADE…

This year gymnastic spring arrived in the middle of winter. Outside it was February, with frosts down to minus twenty, while in the halls of the “Ozero Krugloye” training base the CIS Cup and the CIS Championship in individual events were underway — the first competition of its kind in the history of artistic gymnastics, and probably the last.

WE ARE OF ONE BLOOD

From an interview with Leonid Arkayev, head coach of the CIS national teams:

— Leonid Yakovlevich, you’ve always said how important it is to preserve the gymnastics family, a kind of “guild” of our own…

— And I’ll say it again now. Without our proven methodology, without our brotherhood, this phenomenon in sport — our artistic gymnastics — simply won’t exist. What we built over more than thirty years will perish. Unfortunately, far from everyone understands this. The centrifugal forces are very strong.

— How do the people around you perceive the situation?

— They fall into two categories: the coaches we worked with here at “Ozero Krugloye,” who gave themselves fully to gymnastics, and the local — or rather parochial — officials. Those I worked with see things the same way I do, and will try to save gymnastics. The others are simply trembling for the posts they were appointed to. We can’t find common ground with them.

— So does that mean the medals in Barcelona will be the last in our history?

— Let’s put it more gently — the performance in Barcelona. The medals still have to be won. And there’s no need to bury gymnastics before its time. Our roots run deep; they’re hard to tear out. Everything depends on whether we manage to keep the coaches. If they stay, we’ll still fight on…

OUR GRANDEES AT THE SPANISH COURT

I think that we, former Soviet fans, can be confident that our former gymnasts will still win medals in Barcelona. Honestly, when I went to the CIS Cup in mid-February, I expected a rather dull competition — it’s hard to be at peak form in winter.

There were certainly some mishaps. Take Sergei Kharkov of Moscow, who performed clearly below his potential. His troubles began on the very first day, during the compulsory program — his hand slipped rather clumsily on the pommel horse, and the Olympic champion ended up on the floor. In principle, nothing too alarming — Sergei and his coach Vitaly Lomtev still have plenty of time. Especially since some of his combinations, on the horizontal bar in particular, are simply unrivaled.

It was also a little disappointing to watch Vitaly Shcherbo. Two years ago he didn’t know what it meant to fumble a dismount. But since last year, it’s precisely his dismounts that have gone wrong. In my view, all his deductions are due solely to the fact that he simply can’t manage to “stick” a landing.

On the other hand, people like Rustam Sharipov — who looked merely average against the backdrop of the “golden boys” — have clearly grown and begun to threaten even grandees like Igor Korobchinsky. When people saw Rustam’s parallel bars routine, the crowd gasped — and seemed to forget to exhale. It was that good!

GODDESSES DON’T LOSE. THEY OCCASIONALLY YIELD.

Svetlana Boginskaya is not a gymnast of “my” style. And frankly, for the last three years or so she hasn’t made the slightest impression on me. But at the competition held at the “Ozero Krugloye” training base, she was in superb form. Slender, having partially revised her program (finally changing her floor routine from her beloved “Raffaella Carrà”), she astonished everyone with how, at her “venerable” age for gymnastics, she can “hold her form” and perform at such a high level. And it really was painful to watch when, two days in a row, Svetlana fell from the uneven bars, managing to secure only eighth place in the all-around.

I DON’T WANT TO BE A LADY-IN-WAITING.

Ah, how long we’ve been writing that Svetlana Boginskaya has no one to compete against within our “ruble zone.” This one “doesn’t measure up,” that one “chokes under pressure.” Though, of course, there are good girls, no question. But… still unpolished.

And then, in the middle of winter, the Goddess’s former ladies-in-waiting suddenly blazed in royal attire. For three days running, Odessa’s Tatiana Gutsu held the lead. A gymnast remarkably matured, grown more beautiful, who now feels herself to be not merely a professional athlete but also a beautiful young woman in her own right.

Unexpectedly, out of the “preparatory ranks” emerged gymnast Tatiana Ignatova, a product of the once-famous Mametyev school in Leninsk-Kuznetsky, where two-time Olympic champion Maria Filatova was also raised.

As for Oksana Chusovitina, whom I’ve been following for quite a few years now, in my opinion she has become too absorbed in acrobatics and has entirely forgotten that women’s artistic gymnastics is not only artistic but also women’s. Truth be told, her old floor routine set to Khachaturian’s music from the ballet “Spartacus,” with which she became world champion, was far more emotionally expressive. But despite everything, it seems that an extraordinarily strong team is coming together for the Olympic Games.

I WOULD LIKE TO LIVE AND DIE IN…

Paris, New York, and so on and so forth. Name any city in a decent country at random, and you won’t be wrong. Alas, a second — or rather, yet another — wave of departures of leading coaches and gymnasts abroad has begun.

I remember, in the autumn, Valeri Liukin telling me in conversation:

— I’ll keep competing as long as the team needs me.

On the last day of the Cup competition, he flew off to America, and at that point, he finished the thought:

— That’s it now. In six months, no one will need us anymore. And I have a daughter to raise…

The matter didn’t end there: on March 2nd, Belarus’s honored coach, who had prepared Olga Korbut for her star turn at the Varna World Championships, Tamara Alekseyeva, flew off to South Africa. Tatiana Ignatova’s coach, Mikhail Barabash, is on a medium-term contract abroad; one of the coaches of young but very talented Ivan Ivankov of Minsk, Vladimir Vatkin, is on a short-term contract in Canada — and so on; there isn’t room to mention them all.

I LOVE YOU…

From an interview with Leonid Arkayev:

— Leonid Yakovlevich, assess what kind of competitive shape your students are in.

— Please, don’t ask me that! They’re my children, and no matter how they perform, they will always remain my children, my students…
