1973: Czechoslovakia Restructures the WAG Program after Munich

From 1936 until 1968, Czechoslovak women’s artistic gymnasts always won at least one medal at the Olympics. In 1972, that streak ended. It led to Czechoslovakia reorganizing its training, creating a more centralized training system with Vít Matlocha at the helm. The coaches’ goal: find a way to recreate Korbut’s magic in Czechoslovakia.

Reminder: Jaroslava Matlochová, who was Čáslavská’s coach at the end of her career, had left to coach in Italy. After Munich, she returned to Czechoslovakia to lead the women’s program with her husband.

Depression is not a program

We have already brought a commentary on women’s gymnastics under this title. These words were uttered by coach Věra Trmalová in a moment of general disappointment from the Munich failure of our gymnasts. She did not bear direct responsibility for the Olympic preparation of the national team, but she felt it — like dozens of others — looking to the future. And her confession seemed to foreshadow a concerted effort to further develop this, our most successful sport to date.

The first half of this year was marked by discussions, controversies, proposals, and changes in the gymnastics family. One of their results was the appointment of a four-member team of coaches for the national women’s team. The head is Vít Matlocha, members are Jaroslava Matlochová, Sonia Hudečkova, and Vladimír Prorok.

Was it just a discussion, Mr. Matlocha?

“No way! We missed one train, we can’t afford not to catch the next one. We’ve worked out a plan for the near and later future and we stick to that plan.”

What’s the goal?

“The 1974 World Championships, where we have to stop the downward trend and prove that Czechoslovak women’s gymnastics can be counted on again. Twenty-three members of the rejuvenated wider A team are in full swing preparing compulsory and optional routines.”

And then?

“We should reach for a medal again at the next Olympics. That’s why the program of today’s 19 juniors is focused on selecting and practicing progressive and original elements for optional routines, with which the best of them should conquer lost positions in Montreal. Also in the central care* are 30 female students, a group whose composition may change over the years, but whose development will not be left to chance.”

[*The article uses the word péče, which can be translated as care or nurture but can also be translated as guardianship or custody. For example, pěstounská péče is the term for foster care in Czech.]

Four people are supposed to do all that work?

“They can’t handle it. We want to consistently work with the squad coaches to invite them to camps and listen to their voices. Simply raise the level not only of the athletes, but the coache,s as well. It won’t be strange if a dozen female athletes are accompanied to the camp by a dozen coaches. It is the most effective and ultimately the cheapest training because it will ensure a steady rise in their professional and pedagogical level. And gymnastics cannot do without a rich coaching background.”

Before the Olympics, coaches had reservations about centrally controlled preparation. Don’t they have them anymore?

“It is always a question of what form and what arguments are used to justify to them the correctness of this path. We don’t want to take away their athletes, we just want to allow them to prepare in optimal conditions. Once the conditions are good everywhere, there will be no reason for them not to keep their athletes at home.”

What do you miss most on the team?

“There is no personality in it yet, but some of the athletes have the potential to become personalities in the future. We need to move away from the ‘concrete’ types who give solid performances, but only solid, and find girls like Korbut. She has based her fame mainly on unusual, bold, and impressive elements. That’s what our search is all about.”

And the advantages of our athletes?

“There is no point in painting something pink, the current level is not good. The strength of our gymnasts is that they learn very quickly. So we have to do something like a quick welding with them now, that is, as soon as possible, to overcome the crisis, to find for each of them elements that are not technically demanding, but which suit them, and to replace the demandingness with originality that will attract and make them stand out. To find out what makes each one stand out — some have an extraordinary bounce, others excel on the beam, others have a graceful and impressive expression in floor exercise — and use it. In the current situation, we can’t push through with a frontal attack, but we have to look for loopholes that will allow us to get through.”

Does all this mean a lot more work for coaches and athletes?

“Rather, more quality and more thoughtful work. The tedious, prolonged drudgery runs the risk of erasing the personality, and that’s what we want to avoid. You can’t do it without work, of course, but the benefits have to be weighed individually.”

To sum it up – so are the prospects optimistic or the opposite?

“We are not kidding ourselves, but we are still looking to the future with hope. Without that, our work would have no juice or meaning. And depression really cannot be the program.”

Třiadvacet členek omlazeného širšího A družstva v plném tempu připravuje povinné i volné sestavy.”

A dále?

To všechno mají zvládnout čtyři lidé?

Nebude zvláštností, jestli s tuctem závodnic přijede do výcvikového tábora i tucet trenérů. Je to nejúčinnější a koneckonců i nejlevnější školení, protože zajistí stálý vzestup jejich odborné i pedagogické úrovně. A gymnastika se bez bohatého trenérského zázemí nemůže obejít.”

Trenéři měli před olympiádou výhrady proti centrálně řízené přípravě. Dnes už je nemají?

„Jde vždycky o to, jakou formou a jakými argumenty se jim správnost této cesty zdůvodní. My jim přece nechceme závodnice brát, jenom umožnit přípravu v optimálních podmínkách.

A přednosti našich?

Vyhmátnout u každé, čím vyniká — některá má mimořádný odraz, jiná výbornou kladinu, další půvab a působivý́ projev v prostných — a využít toho.

„Spíše víc kvalitnější a promyšlenější práce.

Bez toho by naše práce neměla šťávu ani smysl. A deprese opravdu nemůže být programem.”
