In June of 1971, Nicolae Ceauşescu, the general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party, paid a visit to China and North Korea.
One year later, Chinese gymnasts went to Romania for a competition.
Note: We’ll see a similar timeline between the U.S. and China with Nixon going to China in 1972 and Chinese gymnasts traveling to the United States in 1973.
While the Chinese men’s team defeated the Romanian team, the Chinese women were not as successful. After the competition, the teams held joint training sessions, during which the Chinese gymnasts learned the compulsory routines. Apparently, Cai Huanzong’s routines looked even better than the figures used to depict the compulsory routines.
Note: After Ceauşescu’s visit to China, he published the “July Theses,” which ended a period of ideological diversity and cultural liberalization in Romania. A list of banned books, for example, was reinstated. Academics debate the extent to which Chinese political thought influenced Ceauşescu.
Note #2: China withdrew from the FIG in 1964, so this meet was important because it showed that China was dipping its toes back into the waters of international competition after a long absence.

GUEST GYMNASTS VICTORIOUS!
At Brașov, at the meeting of Romania – P.R. of China
BRAȘOV, 8 (by phone, from our representative). The town’s Army Hall was, Saturday afternoon, a welcoming host for the men’s gymnastics teams of Romania and the P.R. China, who met here in a friendly test match. Held a friendly atmosphere, which is characteristic of meetings between the Romanian and Chinese athletes, the competition from Brașov offered the two teams an excellent opportunity to show off their knowledge and skills, the sports show being at of very high quality. The audience often applauded the technical performances of the two teams. Given the friendly nature of the competition, it was agreed that the teams would be made up of 8 gymnasts – so that all the athletes could perform. Unfortunately, however, during the general warm-up before the first event, Petre Mihaiuc injured his hand and was stopped from competing by the physician. Our team was thus left without one of its main sportsmen, performing based on the following structure: Dan Grecu, Mircea Gheorghiu, Nicolae Oprescu, Gheorghe Jăunescu, Vasile Coșariu and Constantin Petrescu. The guests form a formidable team, their exercises are of a remarkable technical level, with many spectacular and surprising combinations, performed in an impeccable posture, with great confidence.
On floor, the Romanian gymnasts were superior, with 46.20 p compared to 45.35 p for the guests. The best performance was offered by Oprescu, who scored 9.40 and was spontaneously congratulated by his opponents at the end of the exercise. We should note the fact that Vasile Coșariu and Tai Huan-tun performed the double jump, unfortunately, with their arms touching the ground.
At the pommel horse, the guests won with 45.65 p, against 45.15 p accumulated by the Romanian team. Oprescu, Petrescu and Grecu had mistakes in their performance, also losing some points.
At some apparatus, the advantage goes to the team of the P.R. of China, which is in the lead after three events (at this apparatus the guests obtained 46,00 p, while our representatives obtained only 45,60). We should note Ian Iun-tien’s elegant and precise performance on the pommel horse, which the judges scored 9.35. And on the next three apparatus the competition between the Romanian and Chinese gymnasts was equally balanced and spectacular, our athletes winning on bars with 46.55, against 46.20 obtained by the guests (at this apparatus the performances of Tai Huan-tun and C. Petrescu were highly applauded), while on vault and parallel bars the victory went to the Chinese team with 45.40-45.10 points and 46.45-46.15 respectively.

La Brașov, în întîlnirea România — R.P. Chineză
BRAȘOV, 8 (prin telefon, de la trimisul nostru). Sala Armatei din localitate a fost, sîmbătâ după amiază, o gazdă primitoare pentru echipele masculine de gimnastică ale României și R. P. Chineze, care și-au dat aici întîlnire, intr-un meci amical cu caracter de verificare. Desfășurat într-o ambianță prietenească, caracteristică întîlnirilor dintre sportivii români și chinezi, concursul de la Brașov a oferit celor două reprezentative un excelent prilej de a-și etala cunoștințele și măiestria, spectacolul sportiv fiind la înălțime. Deseori, publicul a aplaudat la scenă deschisă execuțiile tehnice ale celor două echipe. Dat fiind caracterul amical al întrecerii, s-a căzut de acord ca echipele să fie alcătuite din cîte 8 gimnaști — spre a putea evolua toți sportivii deplasați de oaspeți. Din păcate, însă, la încălzirea generală dinaintea primei probe, Petre Mihaiuc s-a accidentat la mină, fiind oprit de medic să mai concureze. Formația noastră a fost lipsită astfel de unul dintre oamenii săi de bază, evoluînd în următoarea alcătuire : Dan Grecu, Mircea Gheorghiu, Nicolae Oprescu, Gheorghe Jăunescu, Vasile Coșariu și Constantin Petrescu. Oaspeții formează un team redutabil, exercițiile lor fiind de un remarcabil nivel tehnic, cu multe combinații spectaculoase și surprinzătoare, executate într-o ținută impecabilă, cu deosebită siguranță.
La sol, superioritatea a fost de partea gimnaștilor români, care au acumulat 46,20 p față de cele 45,35 p ale oaspeților. Cea mai bună execuție a fost a lui Oprescu notat cu 9,40 și felicitat spontan la terminarea exercițiului de adversarii săi. De remarcat că Vasile Coșariu și Tai Huan-tun au executat dublusalt, din păcate cu atingerea solului cu brațele
La cal cu minere s-au impus oaspeții, cu 45,65 p, față de 45,15 p acumulate de echipa română. Oprescu, Petrescu și Grecu au avut greșeli in execuții, fiind, de asemenea, depunctați.
La unele din nou avantaj pentru echipa R. P. Chineze, care trece în frunte după trei probe (la acest aparat oaspeții au obținut 46,00 p, în vreme ce reprezentanții noștri au realizat doar 45,60). O mențiune pentru execuția elegantă și precisă, avută de Ian Iun-tien la cal cu minere și notată de arbitri cu 9,35. Și la următoarele trei aparate lupta dintre gimnaștii români și cei chinezi a fost la fel de echilibrată și spectaculoasă, sportivii noștri cîștigind la bară cu 46,55, față de 46,20 , obținute de oaspeți (la acest aparat fiind îndelung aplaudate evoluțiile lui Tai Huan-tun și C. Petrescu), în vreme ce la sărituri și paralele victoria a revenit echipei R. P. Chineze cu 45,40—45,10 p și, respectiv, 46,45— 46,15.
The Women’s Competition
OUR GYMNASTS HAD AN EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE
BRAȘOV, 9 (by phone, from our representative). The second day of the international friendly gymnastics competition between Romania and the P. R. of China included, on Sunday afternoon, the women’s competition. The Army Hall was crowded with many Gymnastics lovers, thus, the demonstration of virtuosity and mastery of the Romanian and Chinese athletes was watched and applauded by a large audience. Two of our country’s masters, the country’s champion Elena Ceampelea and Alina Goreac, were missing from the team, as they are still recovering from injuries. Consequently, the coaches have lined up a young team with real chances for success: Iuliana Simonfi, Ștefania Bacoș, Anca Grigoraș, Mariana Gheciov, Elisabeta Turcu and Paula Ioan. Wanda Ispravnicu and Rodica Sabău were also used as reserves. Both teams showed a good competitive spirit, performing their optional routines at a high standard. On vault and parallel, the first events of the competition, the Romanian gymnasts clearly stood out from their opponents, obtaining clear victories with 46.95-45.95 (vault) and 47.05-45.85 respectively. Paula Ioan and Elisabeta Turcu performed remarkably well in these events, ranking in the first two places with scores of over 9.50.
On the beam, the guest gymnasts performed in an excellent manner – we should note the high-class performance of Tiang Gian-i (9.50) – winning with 46.70 p, against 46.10 p achieved by our team, while the floor exercise was dominated and won by the Romanian gymnasts with 46.95 p – 46.60 p. In this event, the graceful and precise performances of Ștefaniei Bacoș (9.50) and Paula Ioan (9.45) should be highlighted.

GIMNASTELE NOASTRE S-AU COMPORTAT EXCELENT
BRAȘOV, 9 (prin telefon, de la trimisul nostru). Ziua a doua a concursului internațional amical de gimnastică dintre selecționatele României și R. P. Chineze a programat, duminică după-amiază, întrecerea formațiilor feminine. Sala Armatei a fost luată cu asalt de mulți iubitori ai gimnasticii, astfel că demonstrația de virtuozitate și măiestrie a sportivelor românce și chineze a fost urmărită și aplaudată de un numeros public. Din echipa țării noastre au lipsit două dintre cele mai bune maestre, campioana țării, Elena Ceampelea, și Alina Goreac, care se resimt încă după unele accidente. In consecință, antrenorii au aliniat o garnitură tînără, cu reale posibilități de afirmare : Iuliana Simonfi, Ștefania Bacoș, Anca Grigoraș, Mariana Gheciov, Elisabeta Turcu și Paula Ioan. De asemenea, au fost folosite, ca rezerve, Wanda Ispravnicu și Rodica Sabău. Ambele echipe au manifestat o bună dispoziție de concurs, prezentând exercițiile libere alese la un nivel ridicat. Ca sărituri și paralele, cele dintîi probe ale concursului, gimnastele românce s-au detașat net de adversarele lor, obținînd victorii clare, cu 46.95—45.95 (sărituri) și respectiv 47.05—45.85. Evoluții remarcabile au avut la aceste probe Paula Ioan și Elisabeta Turcu, clasate pe primele două locuri, cu note de peste 9,50.
La bârnă, gimnastele oaspete au evoluat excelent — o remarcă pentru execuția de clasă a sportivei Tiang Gian-i (9,50) — cucerind victoria cu 46,70 p, față de 46,10 p realizate de echipa noastră, în vreme ce exercițiul la sol a fost dominat și cîștigat de gimnastele românce cu 46,95 p — 46,60 p. La această probă se cer subliniate evoluțiile pline de grație și precizie ale Ștefaniei Bacoș (9,50) și Paulei loan (9,45).
On the Joint Trainings
The visit of the Chinese gymnasts, under the sign of friendship and collaboration
The sounds of the Romanian Rhapsody, which serve as a musical background to the exercise of our gymnasts, resonated impressively in the Army Hall in Brașov, and could be easily heard even outside. It was the best indication that inside the gymnasts of the Romanian team were training intensively, practicing a combination, an element of difficulty or “an integral” on the floor. We headed for the hall, eager to see them at work before the final which would decide the country’s new champions.
But, surprise. In the hall there was not a single master from the Romanian team, in a perfect order, continuously listening to the coaches’ instructions, in the area reserved for the performance of the floor exercises, as well as at other apparatus. Actually, the gymnasts from the P.R. of China, present in our country these days for an exchange of experience with the best Romanian masters, for an official meeting with the Romanian representative teams, were working intensively. As was only natural, besides the extra-sports program, which included visiting tourist and historical places near Brașov, or watching a folklore show, the guests also used their stay in our country for training, in order to maintain their athletic condition.
Immediately after the bilateral matches, the Chinese and Romanian gymnasts attended several joint training sessions, which were excellent opportunities to exchange views between athletes and coaches from the two countries, to strengthen the honest friendship between the Romanian and Chinese gymnasts. For example, at the first training session, mixed working groups were created, under the leadership of Romanian and Chinese coaches. At the request of the guests, the hosts presented the program required for all apparatus, and then went on to explain some movements, for a better understanding of them by the Chinese gymnasts. And it was no small surprise when, at the end of the training session, Tai Huan-tun performed the entire exercise on parallel bars, even better than on the kymograph. The game called of “Cap Hunt,” which ended the joint training, created a general atmosphere of good cheerfulness. The Romanian gymnasts offered to drive the guests to the hotel, traveling together on the same bus. It was the turn of the Chinese gymnasts to make a gesture of deep friendship towards their hosts. In perfect Romanian, the entire P.R. China delegation sang “Three colors I know in the world”!
[Note: Cap hunt is a game in which two teams are facing each other about 20-30 m from each other. In the middle of the field, there is a stick stuck in the ground, on which a cap is placed. One player from each team approaches the cap and tries to take it back to their respective team without getting caught by the player from the opposing team.]
The girls’ training, held in the afternoon, also included many moments of sincere and full mutual friendship, the guest gymnasts proving amazing ease in learning the required exercises and an extraordinary power of assimilation. The pianist of the Chinese delegation surprised everyone with his extraordinary receptiveness to the music our gymnasts were working to on the floor. Not only did he learn the music for the challenges in the first session, but after only two days he knew the songs of all the girls, on which afterward some of the Chinese gymnasts worked on too. Wishing to master the exercises as quickly and deeply as possible, the gymnasts from the P.R. of China devoted a large part of each training session to these exercises, which explains, among other things, the reason why the Romanian Rhapsody was heard more and more often these days in the Army Hall in Brașov.
On their third visit to our country (the first ones took place in 1959 and 1962), the gymnastics teams of the P.R. of China eloquently demonstrated the remarkable qualities of the athletes of this friendly country, shown both in the two bilateral meetings with the Romanian teams and in the training sessions. From a technical point of view, the guests impressed everyone first of all because of the accuracy of their performance (even when it comes to the most difficult elements), which is based on very good physical and artistic training. Their exercises are impressive, with high acrobatics and spectacular bindings. During the training, the athletes and coaches work in perfect discipline, repeat the difficult elements dozens of times, and are always in a good mood, impressed and fully satisfied with the welcome they received during their stay in our country. The Chinese gymnasts have only good things to say about our athletes and the teams that will represent us at the Olympic Games in Munich. Throughout the visit, the friendship and brotherly collaboration between Romanian and Chinese gymnasts were shown on many levels, constituting an eloquent testimony of the strong ties between our nations.

Vizita gimnaștilor chinezi, sub semnul prieteniei și colaborării
Acordurile Rapsodiei Române, care servesc drept fond muzical exercițiului impus al gimnastelor noastre, răsunau impresionant in sala Armatei din Brașov, puțind fi auzite cu ușurință pînă în stradă. Era cel mai bun indiciu că înăuntru gimnastele din lotul României se antrenează intens, exersînd o combinație, un element de dificultate sau „un integral“ la sol. Ne îndreptăm pașii spre sală, în dorința de a le vedea la lucru, înaintea finalei ce avea să desemneze pe noile campioane ale țării.
Dar, surpriză. In sală nu se afla nici o maestră din lotul României, într-o ordine desăvîrșită, ascultînd in permanență de indicațiile antrenorilor, pe spațiul rezervat executării exercițiilor la sol, precum și la alte aparate, lucrau intens gimnastele și gimnaștii din R. P. Chineză, prezenți în aceste zile în țara noastră pentru un schimb de experiență cu cei mai buni maeștri români, pentru o întîlnire oficială cu echipele reprezentative ale României. Cum era și firesc, pe lingă programul extrasportiv, care a cuprins vizitarea unor locuri de interes turistic și istoric din apropierea Brașovului, sau vizionarea unui spectacol de folclor, oaspeții au folosit șederea în țara noastră și pentru antrenamente, în scopul menținerii formei sportive.
Imediat după meciurile bilaterale, gimnaștii chinezi și români au participat la cîteva ședințe comune de pregătire, excelente prilejuri de schimburi de păreri între sportivii și antrenorii din cele două țări, de întărire a relațiilor sincere de prietenie dintre gimnaștii români și chinezi. La primul antrenament, de pildă, au fost alcătuite grupe mixte de lucru, sub conducerea antrenorilor români și chinezi. La solicitarea oaspeților, gazdele au prezentat programul impus la toate aparatele, trecîndu-se apoi la explicarea unor mișcări, pentru o mai bună înțelegere a lor de către gimnaștii chinezi. Și nu mică a fost surpriza cînd, la finele antrenamentului, Tai Huan-tun a executat integral exercițiul la paralele, mai bine chiar decît în chinogramă. Jocul „vînătoarea capelei“, cu care s-a încheiat antrenamentul comun, a creat o atmosferă generală de bună dispoziție. Gimnaștii români s-au oferit să-i conducă pe oaspeți pînă la hotel, călătorind Împreună în același autobuz. A fost rîndul gimnaștilor chinezi să facă un gest de profundă amiciție față de gazdele lor. Într-o perfectă limbă română, întreaga delegație a R. P. Chineze a evitat „Trei culori cunosc pe lume“ !
Antrenamentul fetelor, desfășurat după amiază, a cunoscut și el numeroase momente de sinceră și deplină prietenie reciprocă, gimnastele oaspete dovedind o uimitoare ușurință în învățarea exercițiilor impuse, o extraordinară putere de asimilare. Pianistul delegației chineze i-a surprins pe toți prin extraordinara sa receptivitate la muzica pe care lucrează gimnastele noastre la sol. Nu numai că a învățat din prima ședință muzica pentru impuse, dar după numai două zile cunoștea melodiile tuturor fetelor, după care lucrau apoi și unele dintre gimnastele chineze. Dorind să-și însușească cît mai repede și cit mai profund exercițiile impuse, gimnaștii și gimnastele din R. P. Chineză acordă acestora un mare spațiu din fiecare antrenament, fapt ce explică, intre altele, și acordurile Rapsodiei Române care răsună tot mai des în aceste zile în sala Armatei din Brașov.
La a treia lor vizită în țara noastră (primele au avut loc in 1959 și 1962) echipele de gimnastică ale R. P. Chineze ne demonstrează în mod elocvent calitățile remarcabile de care dispun sportivii din țara prietenă, manifestate atît în cele două întâlniri bilaterale cu echipele Romaniei, cit și în ședințele de antrenament. Din punct de vedere tehnic, oaspeții impresionează, în primul rînd prin acuratețea execuției (chiar și atunci cînd e vorba de elemente de cea mai mare dificultate), bazată pe o foarte bună pregătire fizică și artistică. Exercițiile lor frapează prin acrobatică înaltă, prin legări spectaculoase. La antrenamente, sportivi și antrenori lucrează într-o disciplină perfectă, repetă de zeci de ori elementele dificile, manifestă în permanență o molipsitoare bună dispoziție, impresionați și pe deplin satisfăcuți de primirea ce le-a fost asigurată in timpul șederii în țara noastră, gimnastele și gimnaștii chinezi au cele mai bune cuvinte la adresa sportivilor noștri, a echipelor ce ne vor reprezenta la J. O. de la München. Pe întreaga durată a vizitei, prietenia și colaborarea frățească dintre gimnaștii români și chinezi s-au manifestat pe multiple planuri, constituind o elocventă mărturie a trainicelor legături dintre popoarele noastre.
