Zinaida Voronina (née Druzhinina) and Mikhail Voronin were a gymnastics power couple. When they had a child in 1969, it was an exciting event in the sports world. The press was buzzing with questions, such as: What would the child of two Olympic gymnastics champions be like? Certainly, he would be a gymnast, right? And would Zinaida be able to get back into shape in time for the 1970 World Championships?
Let’s take a look at some of the excitement and speculation surrounding the Voronin family in 1970, both in the Soviet and Czechoslovak media.
A Profile of the Zinaida and Her Son before the Soviet Championships

Experts in Mexico at that time had much higher hopes for Natasha Kuchinskaya, who was considered the most serious rival of Věra Čáslavská in the fight for Olympic gold in gymnastics. However, there was a surprise: on the second step of the podium, alongside the fair-haired Olympic champion from Czechoslovakia, stood a sympathetic black-haired woman, Zinaida Voronina. The silver medal of the second-most-successful gymnast in the world was worth gold to her; she had not counted on such an achievement herself. And what’s more, it contributed to “equality” in the family: her husband, Mikhail Voronin, also brought back silver from Mexico for second place in the all-around.
Exactly one year after this “family” success at the Olympics, the Voronins were happy again, perhaps even more so than in Mexico. In October 1969, they experienced a joyful event — Zinaida had a son. He was named Dmitri (his parents called him Dima), and the young mother’s concerns began to be somewhat different.
But motherhood was not the end of competitive gymnastics for Zinaida. True, she had to stop training for a few months, but she hopes to catch up. When she couldn’t start training yet, she did at least morning exercises every day. The gym didn’t reopen for her until January this year. She said she ran across the floor that day, January 2, with such eagerness, as if she wanted to catch up on everything she had missed in one day. But just completing the warm-up, she felt so tired, as if she had just gone through the entire all-around competition, both compulsories and optionals. The next day, she came in with a trainer and started pretty slowly.
In March, Zinaida took part in her first minor competition, supposedly “just so no one would see.” In April, she checked her growing form in the first clash with her Olympic teammates Larisa Petrik and Ludmilla Tourischeva.
“I want to compete at the USSR Championships at the end of May,” says Zinaida Voronina. “After all, this year is the World Championships, and I would love to repeat my success from Mexico!”
So both mother and son is getting in shape (the father is said to take it for granted). Zinaida in the gym, little Dima in the crib. He is 7 months old, he can already stand on his own, and his mother says he “promised” that he will take his first steps at the end of May. The Voronin family has not discussed yet when the dad will put him on the parallel bars for the first time…

Matka i syn nabírají formu
Odborníci tenkrát v Mexiku vkládali podstatně větší naděje do Nataši Kučinské, kterou považovali za nejvážnější soupeřku Věry Čáslavské v boji o olympijské zlato ve sportovní gymnastice. Došlo však k překvapení: na druhém stupínku po boku plavovlasé olympijské vítězky z ČSSR stanula sympatická černovláska, Zinaida Voroninová. Stříbrná medaile druhé nejúspěšnější gymnastky světa měla pro ni cenu zlata; sama s takovým úspěchem nepočítalo. A navíc — přispělo to k „rovnoprávnosti“ v rodině: její manžel Michail Voronin si totiž z Mexika přivezl rovněž stříbro za 2. místo v dvanáctíbojí.
Přesně za rok po tomto „rodinném“ olympijském úspěchu radovali se manželé Voroninovi znovu, snad ještě víc než v Mexiku. V říjnu 1969 se totiž dočkali radostné události — Zinaidě se narodil syn. Dostal jméno Dmitrij (rodiče mu říkají Dima) a mladé mamince začaly starosti poněkud odlišné.
Jenže mateřstvím pro Zinaidu závodní gymnastika zdaleka neskončila. Pravda, na několik měsíců musela přerušit trénink, ale to vše si troufá dohonit. V době, kdy ještě nemohla začít s přípravou, dělala denně alespoň ranní tělocvik. Tělocvična se pro ni znovu otevřelo až v lednu letošního roku. Rozběhla se prý tenkrát, 2. ledna, po parketách s takovou nedočkavosti, jako by chtěla dohonit všechno zameškané za jediný den. Ale jen absolvovala rozcvičku, cítila takovou únavu, jako kdyby právě prošla celým osmibojem. Další den už přišla s trenérem a začalo se pěkně pozvolna.
V březnu se Zinaida zúčastnila prvního, méně významného závodu, prý jen tak, „aby to nikdo neviděl“. V dubnu si ověřila růst formy V prvním střetnutí se svými družkami z olympijské komandy Larissou Petrikovou a Ludmilou Turiščevovou.
„Koncem května chci startovat na mistrovství SSSR,“ říká Zinaida Voroninová. „Vždyť letos je mistrovství světa a já bych tak ráda opakovala svůj úspěch z Mexika!“
Matka i syn tedy nabírají formu (u otce prý je to samozřejmé). Zinaida v tělocvičně, malý Dima zatím v postýlce. Je mu 7 měsíců, už dokáže sám stát a matce prý „slíbil“, že koncem května zvládne první kroky. Kdy ho táta poprvé vysadí na bradla, o tom se v rodině Voroninových zatím nehovoří…

The Voronins Are Selected for the World Championships
Husband and Wife Are Packing Their Bags
For the third time, a nice gymnastics couple — Zinaida and Mikhail — are going to the great clash of the best in the world. Four years ago in Dortmund, the girl, back then bearing the name Druzhinina, and the young man Voronin were only connected by their membership in the Soviet national gymnastics team. But they came to the Olympic competition in Mexico as husband and wife. They will travel to Ljubljana less carefree, as they have to be separated from their one-year-old son Dima for a few days. However, they intend to bring him a handful of medals from the World Championships to play with. How many will there be?
When Zinaida moved from Yoshkar-Ola to Moscow a few years ago, she soon worked her way to the top under the guidance of coach Vladimir Shelkovnikov. At the 1966 USSR Championships, the 19-year-old beauty won a silver medal for her floor exercise. In addition, the title of “Miss Gymnastics.” In the autumn of the same year, during the World Championships in Dortmund, journalists debated endlessly and without result whether to award the championship of the most beautiful gymnast to her or to Bohunka Řimnáčová. Zinaida was not interested in this competition. She was much more pleased with the bronze medal for the floor exercise.

Dortmund, however, brought the success of a lifetime to twenty-one-year-old Moscow resident Mikhail Voronin, who — although he was performing at the World Championships for the first time — won the title of all-around world champion and world champion on the rings. In addition, he achieved three records: never before had such a young athlete won a world competition. Never before had the winner had such a lead over the second athlete — 1.25 points.* Finally, such a high score (116.5 points) had never been seen in a competition of this kind before. Voronin’s style is a synthesis of swing and power techniques. His exercises are characterized by manly restraint, inner concentration, and indifference to external effects.

In the approach of Zinaida Druzhinina and Mikhail Voronin, two opposite directions have merged, from the clash of which grows a diverse and complex profile of contemporary gymnastics.
A year after the two young people were introduced to the global public, they became husband and wife. Today, the two students of the Institute of Physical Education often train in one hall. But they don’t challenge each other when they practice.
“We each have our own coach,” says Mikhail, “and we submit to them. But when we train outside the program, I often help Zina, especially with acrobatics.”
“And does she help you?”
“She helps me in everything. I like to watch her floor exercise. I can’t take anything from it; I watch like any spectator, but I’m learning to understand gymnastics better and better. Women’s gymnastics is undeniably more artistic and diverse than men’s gymnastics.”
The couple brought back a whole collection of medals from Mexico. Zina won a silver in the all-around, two bronze in the finals, and as a member of the Soviet team, a gold. Mikhail got silver for second place in the all-around and as a member of the team, and two golds, two silvers, and one bronze from the finals.
Voronin is called an academic by many. Some are captivated by his flawless mastery, others criticize him for this perfection, because they say he leaves no room for improvisation and unexpected surprises. Mikhail has a principle.
“My goal is to practice every element of the routine so that it escalates in effect from start to finish. I don’t want to sacrifice the purity of the exercise in favor of difficulty. My coach, Eugene Korolkov, says that only diamonds of clear water are valued in gymnastics. And I agree with his opinion.”
Last year, the Voronins had a son, Dima. Mikhail, who a year before said that he dreamed of a son, was unspeakably happy. Soon after the birth of the child, the father became — for the second time — the all-around champion of Europe. He practiced then with such confidence and enthusiasm that no one could have accused him of “unnecessary academicism.”
A pleasant surprise of the last USSR Championship was also the second place of mother Zinaida. She was able to recover her form in a very short time and outperform all the outstanding athletes of her country except Lyuba Burdov.
Now, both spouses are living for October’s championship in Ljubljana. Zinaida intends — as she says — “to catch up with Misha in the number of titles.”
“I think our women,” he does not hesitate to predict, “can almost count on success. Olga Karaseva has already twice managed to beat the European champion, Karin Janz, from the GDR. But the men will have a harder time.”
“In the autumn,” adds the head of the family, “I saw the young Japanese gymnasts Kenmotsu Eizo and Kasamatsu Shigeru performing during a friendly contest in Moscow. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did something in Ljubljana that hasn’t been done before. But I don’t mean to say that my friend Viktor Klimenko or Sergei Diomidov were behind them. I don’t want to be a bad prophet, but one thing is already certain — Ljubljana spectators will not see a less interesting competition than any of the past Olympic Games or World Championships.”

Potřetí se už vypravuje sympatický gymnastický pár — Zinaida a Michail — na velké střetnutí nejlepších na světě. Před čtyřmi roky v Dortmundu ještě dívku Družininovou a mladého muže Voronina spojovalo jenom členství v reprezentačním družstvu sovětských gymnastů. No olympijskou soutěž do Mexika přijeli už jako manželé. Do Lublaně odcestují už méně bezstarostně, protože se musí na pár dní odloučit od ročního synka Dimy. Mají však v úmyslu přivézt mu na hraní hrst medaili z mistrovství světa. Kolik jich bude?
Když se před několika lety přistěhovala Zinaida z města Joškar-Ola do Moskvy, záhy se pod vedením trenéra Vladimíra Šelkovnikova propracovala mezi špičku. Na mistrovství SSSR v roce 1966 získala devatenáctiletá krasavice stříbrnou medaili za svá prostná. Navíc ještě titul „Miss gymnastiky“. Na podzim téhož roku rozvažovali novináři při světovém šampionátu v Dortmundu donekonečna a bez výsledku, zda přiřknout prvenství nejkrásnější gymnastky jí nebo Bohunce Řimnáčové, O tuto soutěž neměla Zinaida zájem. Daleko víc ji těšila bronzová medaile za prostná.
Dortmund však Přinesl životní úspěch jedenadvacetiletému Moskvanovi Michailu Voroninovi, který — ač cvičil na mistrovství světa poprvé — vybojoval titul absolutního mistra světa a mistra světa na kruzích. Navíc dosáhl tří rekordů: do té doby nevyhrál ještě nikdy tak mladý závodník světovou soutěž. Nikdy předtím neměl vítěz takový náskok před druhým závodníkem -—. 1,25 bodu. A konečně i tak vysoké ohodnocení (116,5 b.) se dosud v soutěži tohoto druhu neobjevilo. Voroninův styl je syntézou švihové a silové techniky. Jeho cvičení charakterizuje mužná zdrženlivost, vnitřní soustředění a netečnost k vnějším efektům.
V pojetí Zinaidy Družininové a Michaila Voronina se spojily dva protilehlé směry, z jejichž střetávání vyrůstá různorodý a složitý profil současné gymnastiky.
Rok poté, co se oba mladí lidé představili světové veřejnosti, stali se manželi. Dnes oba dva posluchači institutu tělesné výchovy často trénují v jednom sóle. Při cvičení si ale navzájem nenapovídají.
„Každý máme svého trenéra,“ říká Michail, „a podřizujeme se jim. Když však trénujeme mimo program, často pomáhám Zině, hlavně při akrobacii.”
„A ona vám?”
„Pomáhá mi ve všem. Rád se dívám na její prostná. Nemohu z nich nic převzít, dívám se jako kterýkoliv divák, ale učím se tím stále lépe chápat gymnastiku. Ženská gymnastika je nesporně umělečtější a různorodější než gymnastika mužská.“
Z Mexika si manželé přivezli celou sbírku medaili. Zina získala v osmiboji stříbrnou, ve finále dvě bronzové a jako členka sovětského družstva i zlatou. Michail stříbrné za druhé místo ve dvanáctiboji, jako člen družstva, z finále pak dvě zlatě, dvě stříbrné a jednu bronzovou.
Voronina nazývají mnozí akademikem. Jedni jsou uchvácení jeho bezchybným mistrovstvím, druzí mu tuto dokonalost vytýkají, protože prý nenechává místo pro improvizaci a neočekávaná překvapení. Michail má svou zásadu.
„Mým cílem je zacvičit každý prvek sestavy tak, aby se od počátku do konce její účin stupňoval. Nechci obětovat čistotu cvičení ve prospěch obtížnosti. Můj trenér Evžen Korolkov říká, že se v gymnastice oceňují jen diamanty čisté vody. A já s jeho názorem souhlasím.“
Loni se Voroninovým narodil syn Dima. Michail, který rok předtím říkal, že sni o synovi, byl nevýslovně šťasten, Brzy po narození dítěte se otec stal — již podruhé — absolutním mistrem Evropy. Cvičil tehdy tak sebejistě a s nadšením, že by mu byl nikdo nemohl vytknout „zbytečný akademismus”.
Příjemným překvapením minulého mistrovství SSSR bylo i druhé místo matky Zinaidy. Dokázala ve velmi krátké době obnovit svou formu a kromě Ljuby Burdové předstihnout všechny vynikající závodnice své země.
Nyní už žijí oba manželé ve znamení říjnového šampionátu v Lublani, Zinaida má v úmyslu — jak prohlašuje — „dohnat Míšu v počtu titulů“.
„Myslím, že naše ženy,” nerozpakuje se předpovídat, „mohou téměř počítat s úspěchem. Olga Karasevová už dvakrát dokázala porazit mistryní Evropy Karin Janzovou z NDR. Muži to však budou mít těžší.”
„Na podzim jsem viděl při přátelském utkání v Moskvě,“ přidává se i hlava rodiny, „cvičit mladé japonské gymnasty Ejdzo Kenmocu — a Sigero Kasamacu. Nedivil bych se, kdyby v Lublani předvedli něco, co tu ještě nebylo. Nechci tím ale říci, že by můj přítel Viktor Klimenko nebo Sergej Diamidov byli za nimi pozadu. Nechci být špatným prorokem, ale jedno je už dnes jisté — lublaňští diváci neuvidí méně zajímavý závod, než byly kterékoliv soutěže. olympijských her nebo mistrovi světa v minulostí.“
