1970: Reflections on Romanian Gymnastics after Worlds in Ljubljana

At the 1970 World Championships, the Romanian women’s team took 5th place while the men’s team took 8th. Afterward, Constantin Macovei, a reporter for the Romanian sports periodical Sportul, wrote a series of reflections. He criticized the unfair judging in Ljubljana and praised the women’s program for being on track, particularly Ceampelea and Ioan.

As for the men’s program, Macovei provided several concrete suggestions, including scheduling matches that will push the gymnasts rather than give them a guaranteed victory. In addition, he looked forward to the performances of upcoming gymnasts like Adrian Stoica, who would one day become the President of the Men’s Technical Committee at the FIG.

On the Performance of the Women’s Team

OUR WOMEN’S TEAM ON THE ROAD TO INTERNATIONAL ASSERTION

It is a unanimously accepted fact! The 5th place at the 13th World Gymnastics Championships represents a good performance for the Romanian team and honors the six gymnasts who fought hard and achieved this ranking in a competition of high technical value. Of course, sometimes wishes went even further (for example, we hoped that Elena Ceampelea would qualify for the final on floor or balance beam), but, objectively appreciating the value of the competitors and the high level of mastery shown by some teams, we have to accept the performance of the Romanian gymnasts as praiseworthy. In both the compulsory and the optional exercises, they had a presence (interpretation, posture, level of training) that caught the attention of the specialists who came to Ljubljana. The Romanian team proved that it holds outstanding individuality, and its performance on some apparatus was highly appreciated.

Ceampelea — the no. 1 gymnast on the team

Not once did our champion Elena Ceampelea succumb to the trials of great competitions or fail childishly. At the recent World Championships, she was not only the “number 1 man” of the Romanian team, but also a gymnast who placed among the best in the world. It was not a small thing for the journalists at the press table to ask you what time the Romanian champion is competing, no small thing to beat nine gymnasts from the teams ranked ahead of you. It’s a lot to be 5 or 10 hundredths behind the athletes who have the honor of competing at the apparatus finals in some events. Lia was also very close to such a performance and, with fairer judging, would certainly have made it to the top six in the world at these World Championships. Her strengths were the balance beam and the floor, the last event. In particular, these gave her a spectacular assertion. Benefiting from music (unfortunately, the only one) that harmonizes perfectly with the movement, Ceampelea was obviously one of the best performers at this event and it is more than certain that, in the future, the attendance of our champion in large competitions will enjoy even better appreciations. Provided she… learns to vault well, because on this apparatus (as, by the way, all the other Romanian team’s members), Ceampelea has performed below the average level of the World Championships.

The international assertion of young Paula Ioan

A true revelation for many, Paula loan was a debutant in the big international arena, one of the youngest participants in the World Championships. Since the training sessions prior to the official start, her presence was noticed by the press and specialists, not a few giving her chances in some events, vaulting in particular. The second place on the team, the 24th place in the individual all-around (ahead of gymnasts with high world ranking — Hana Lišková, the star of the Czechoslovak team, Nagao Yoko, Murakami Yoko, Luba Krasna, Márta Kelemen, etc.) and the 19th place on vault are proof enough of Paula’s good performance, her full assertion in the international arena. Of course, our young gymnast still has a lot of work to do, especially to improve her posture and the composition of some exercises. But her talent, conscientiousness, hard work, and responsiveness are all prerequisites for Paula Ioan soon becoming a key member of the team, a true star of our gymnastics.

Success in Ljubljana must be consolidated

Nice words can also be said about the other two young women of the Romanian national team, Elisabeta Turcu and Alina Goreac, who, in one apparatus or another, have had meritorious performances, being useful to the team, just as Olga Ștefan or Rodica Apăteanu have contributed, according to their possibilities and to their level of training, to the team’s success. If we take into account the fact that the selection and composition of our women’s team can very soon undergo fundamental improvements (we think of the talented gymnasts of the city of Gh. Gheorghiu- Dej), we can hope, rightfully, that the position won in Ljubljana can be consolidated, that the Romanian women’s gymnastics can once again aspire to full international assertion. Coaches Nicolae Covaci, Emilia Liță, Valeria Munteanu, Gheorghe Gorgol, Mircea Bibire, Petru Miclăuș, Ilorica Dobre, who trained the gymnasts of the group, all the others who work with talented girls at the High School of Gh. Gheorghiu Dej or in other clubs and associations in the country now have increased obligations in the line of training, of continuous improvement of our gymnasts’ mastery, of improvement in vaulting, of the composition of some exercises, of the introduction of new elements of great difficulty, so that at the next international exams, the team or the gymnasts who will represent us will add new positions to those which were already won based on such hard work.

And let’s not forget that the first of these is the European Championship, next October in Minsk, where the Romanian women’s gymnastics must confirm the good performance of Ljubljana.

Ceampelea — gimnasta nr. 1 a echipei

In special, prilejuindu-i o spectaculoasă afirmie.

Afirmarea internațională a tinerei Paula loan

On the Performance of the Men’s Team

REMARKABLE – THE REAPPEARANCE OF THE ROMANIAN MEN’S TEAM

Surprising as it may seem, the attendance of our men’s team in Ljubljana is the third in the history of the World Gymnastics Championships (1911 in Torino – 3rd place, 1958 in Prague – 13th place). The way in which the six athletes presented themselves, their individual results, and the 8th place of the team are all the more deserving, highlighting the resultful work carried out by coaches Costache Gheorghiu, Mircea Rădulescu and Gheorghe Conovici, as well as the efforts made by the gymnasts in the run-up to the “World Championships.”

[Note: The Romanian men did not finish third place in Torino in 1911. In fact, they didn’t compete in most of the events. More about the 1911 World Championships here. Also, while the Romanian men did finish 13th in 1958, the 1958 World Championships were held in Moscow — not Prague.]

In Ljubljana, our men’s team, whose main asset is its youth, presented itself as a strong team, with real possibilities, with individuals who are ready to make their name among the leaders of the competition. Given the high value of the participating teams, of some high-class individuals present in the competition, the performance of the Romanian athletes must be considered meritorious, the place occupied opening the way to an even more pronounced assertion in future international disputes. Our team has constantly performed — both in the compulsory and the optional routines — at the level of its possibilities, the few mistakes made by some athletes being almost normal for the high tension in which the competition was held. The team had good apparatus (vault, high bar), but also weak ones (rings, for example), where precious points were lost. Mihaiuc, in a remarkable comeback after the failure at the national championships, competed with great ambition, with a particular desire for international assertion, mainly succeeding in regards to this. Without the “miss”on pommel horse, he would have gained about 5 places in the individual all-around, as well as Mircea Gheorghiu, the all-around champion of the country, good overall, but also victim of some hesitations or a fall, could have obtained a better ranking. The veteran of our team and of the championships, Gheorghe Tohăneanu — a good competition opener — had a performance very close to the general performance of the team and offered, most of the times, a good “path” to Dan Grecu, Nicolae Achim, Gheorghe Făunescu, or the other Romanian athletes.

Our men’s team and many of its members have made a name for themselves in the international arena and all future efforts must be directed towards strengthening it.

As we have already had the opportunity to point out, the good performance of Romania’s teams at the world championships in Ljubljana must be an opportunity for the governing body of this sport to thoroughly analyze the measures to be taken so that the successes achieved can be confirmed, so that the international assertion becomes fuller, in line with the real possibilities of our leading gymnasts.

• As far as the training itself is concerned, it is desirable that the coaches are much more concerned than before with increasing the physical abilities of the athletes to a higher level, because only by having more strength will they be able to work on improving the technical level on some apparatus where our gymnasts have shown weaknesses. In close connection with this, more attention should be paid to those events (vaulting, for example) where the team, as a whole, or some of its members, perform well and have made their mark on the international arena. Of course, for a quick and constant assertion, it is necessary that all our coaches (both those who have been watching and those who have watched the television broadcasts) work unceasingly to improve the composition of the exercises, especially in the direction of originality, virtuosity, and increasing their degree of difficulty.

• It is necessary, as a measure of the utmost importance, to establish a high school for gymnastics for boys (following the model of the girls’ high school in Gh. Gheorghiu-Dej) and we believe that Timisoara (given the material base, as well as the staff working here) is the best solution in this regard.

 • In the case of the boys, the federation should think about some forms of common training, so that the youngsters knocking at the doors of the national team (Radu Branea, Gh. Iușan, Mihai Borș, Adrian Stoica, Liviu Mazilu, Constantin Petrescu, Nicolae Oprescu) have the opportunity to work together for longer periods of time, to continuously improve their training and mastery.

• Finally, the view of the international program of our teams must change structurally. We should be less interested in those matches in which a sure victory is expected and more in those matches from which our gymnasts really have to learn. For this purpose, it is necessary to take steps to obtain matches with the best teams in the world, being impassible (at least at the beginning) to the final score of the competitions. In any case, more meetings with strong opponents, held abroad, represent many opportunities for knowledge and learning for our gymnasts and specialists and opportunities for them to be noticed by international judges.

REMARCABILĂ – REAPARIŢIA ECHIPEI MASCULINE A ROMÂNIEI
