1972: Sovetsky Sport’s Coverage of the Men’s All-Around in Munich

Soviet gymnasts first competed at the Olympics in 1952, and from 1952 through 1968, there was always a Soviet gymnast on the men’s all-around podium at the Olympics. Then, 1972 happened, and there were no Soviet all-around medalists in men’s artistic gymnastics.

Here’s what Sovetsky Sport, the primary sports newspaper of the Soviet Union, wrote.

NO AWARDS IN THE ALL-AROUND

BUT THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER YET

Imagine the last distance of a good race in which equal competitors meet. There is a fierce scramble. The leaders change almost every second. And finally, in the final seconds, one of the men manages to lunge at a thread that is invisible to the spectators.

I don’t know if the spectators at the Olympic Stadium will ever see such a thing with the track and field athletes, but something similar already happened on the final day of the men’s individual gymnastics all-around competition. The competition was incredibly fierce. After what had happened the previous days, it was clear that only the Japanese were competing for the medals. And yet, our gymnasts were not indifferent onlookers either.

Let me remind you that, at the time of the finals, the tournament table was headed by S. Kato with 57.550 points. However, after the first apparatus, he was driven back by E. Kenmotsu. On parallel bars, he scored 9.45 points, while the Olympic champion of Mexico City [Kato] got only 9.25 on floor. Then the second place went to S. Kasamatsu, who performed on floor. Although it was not as brilliant as the day before, but still quite decent — 9.5. Before the last two apparatus, the second position was taken by A. Nakayama — the owner of a collection of gold medals, which, however, did not include a single victory in the all-around at the top-notch tournaments. Maybe this time fortune will favor the captain of the Japanese team?

We should note, however, that at this stage of the individual competition all athletes are divided into groups by drawing lots, so gymnasts of the same country can perform on different apparatus at the same time. So, Nakayama was on pommel horse at the finish line, a rather tricky apparatus. And for the leader, Kenmotsu, the situation was even worse — he was to perform on vault, which the Japanese are not very good at. With undisguised pleasure, Kato headed for high bar, on which he is as great a master as the rest of his teammates. Kenmotsu vaulted well with 9.6 points; Nakayama also did well — he got 9.4 points on pommel horse. But Kato, that small Sawao Kato, who looked like a teenager, was above all praise. He finished his dashingly twisted combination with a dizzying dismount and got what he needed, and even more — 9.75. That was the winning lunge.

Even small steps up the tournament ladder were not easy for our boys. To do that, N. Andrianov had to perform very cleanly his complicated vault — the front handspring with one-and-a-half front somersault — 9.75 points. He also performed perfectly on high bar, getting 9.65 points. Finally, he managed to take fourth place. Today, Nikolai, when performing a double somersault on the floor, again stepped over the edge of the mat and lost at least 0.2 points. And that’s exactly what he lacked for the bronze medal.

It was even more difficult for V. Klimenko. His injured leg and an abrasion on his palm were making themselves felt. Yet, he was climbing persistently from his eighth place up and made it to sixth place in the end. He was especially successful with the routine on parallel bars, where he got 9.65, and so did Nakayama.

In general, on that day our boys performed the exercises more freely, they did not feel nervous. That’s the kind of spirit they should also have on the day of the finals on individual apparatus. And there are good chances for Klimenko to win medals on pommel horse and parallel bars, for Voronin — on rings, and for Andrianov — on floor exercise, and he could even compete for the highest award on vault.

In a word, the fight is not over yet.
