For the Soviet team, the 1972 all-around final was a whirlwind. There were six Soviet gymnasts in the final and only one Soviet coach on the floor. Polina Astakhova had to run from apparatus to apparatus to spot, adjust equipment, encourage, and comfort.
Sovetsky Sport captured the excitement of the competition by giving a rotation-by-rotation analysis. In the end, the newspaper of record praised the friendship between the Soviet and East German gymnasts: “They were sitting side by side — the gymnasts from the USSR and the GDR. It was their evening, their celebration.”
“IT’S EXCITING WHEN IT’S DIFFICULT”
A STORY OF FLOWERS AND THORNS, OF DRIED TEARS AND SMILES, AND OF HOPES TO WHICH WE WILL RETURN.
Once again, this huge hall under a webbed, fairy-tale roof… The finals. But today, our girls are not together, they were separated by a draw; it has mixed up the cards so you cannot tell at once who should be watched. And now the gymnasts are their own helpers, because Astakhova cannot be in the four corners at once. She is where her help is needed most: at this very difficult moment, she is with Lyuda, who is starting on the vault; you may not worry for Olya and Tamara; you blindfold them — and they will still perform their floor exercises, as the day before, or even better, because now it will be more difficult. It was as recently as yesterday that Korbut dropped a phrase that was born directly out of admiration for all the wonderful gymnastics, the wonders that were overwhelming: “It’s exciting when it’s hard like this.” On the whole, with all her spontaneity and liveliness, Olya puzzled the adults by the unexpected seriousness of her phrases, which she also said very seriously. We will tell about one of her answers to journalists, which was recorded and repeated many times on radio and television.
But now let’s go back to the moment when Tourischeva started her vault. She did everything as if her coach Rastorotskiy was standing next to her. Lyuda stood very firmly after the vault. And from this calm vault it was already clear that nothing would bring her down today, nothing would throw her off-balance, that she has accurately calculated everything and already sees her star turn ahead. After all, Tourischeva would be finishing with the floor exercise; meanwhile, her competitors would be on the bars and balance beam, where the danger of failure was waiting around every corner of the winding, dizzying path leading to the podium. However, the distance between them was very small.
Janz, who walked side by side with Tourischeva (they had 38.425 points each), looked askew at the balance beam. Karin frowned, because she didn’t like the draw result. Or maybe because it was only here that she sensed what she was missing in the program: the poetic lines that this girl from Grozny had made into movements. Tourischeva received 9.65 points after the vault. At this point Janz got a score of 9.4. The hall buzzed because the spectators were cheering for Janz, for Tourischeva, and for Korbut, and in general the audience was enjoying this fierce struggle.
But after a moment … Well, here we will simply refer the readers to that TV program that captured Olga Korbut’s floor routine on the Olympic mat on Tuesday. Because, as was already mentioned, there is no way to describe all those jumps and somersaults. And now it was even lovelier. Some kind of special, inimitable cheerfulness, childlike generosity, and adult courage and inspiration. The judges gave Korbut 9.8 points, and she immediately became the leader. Then Olya vaulted with a score of 9.65 (and so did Janz), and Tourischeva got such a cool score that evening: for the exercises on the bars… And Korbut kept ranking high.
They moved on to the bars — Olya together with Lazakovich, who was in their group, and the confident Zuchold, for whom any misfortune was not a problem. And the sad Dorňáková, who was still reeling from the Czechoslovakian gymnasts’ falls from the balance beam the day before; those falls threw the team back to fifth place. Everyone down here on the bench had their own worries…
Later on, Olya Korbut would explain everything that happened on the unfortunate bars. She would answer the question of the Bavarian radio and television correspondent at the press conference:
— I never thought that this could happen. Probably because I just do not have enough experience. And I need to learn, and I like the bars…
What happened was that she hit the mats with her feet right away, moving to the lower bar, and then she touched the mats with her feet once again and everything went off the rails. And though she mechanically performed the two most difficult elements well, especially the dismount, and though the hall thundered enthusiastically, some unbearable weight fell on her skinny shoulders. Olya ran off the platform, ducked into Tamara’s shoulder and burst out crying. 7.5 — these figures lit up on the scoreboard, depriving Olya of her dream. But then Erika Zuchold ran up to her, hugged her, and began whispering something in her ear, but tears were covering the girl’s eyes, and the entire hall was sighing sympathetically.
She had one apparatus left. She moved to the balance beam, and the cameramen followed her, dragging the camera; the director was merciless, he was looking for her face close-up, he wanted to peek into her soul, see her tragedy. And she didn’t notice anything. But you should have seen the way the audience applauded her as she wiped away her tears and went up to the balance beam. The spectators admired the courage of the athlete, who, seeing the apparatus, forgot about everything, easily jumped on the balance beam and did everything properly. The score is 9.8, and the hall bursts into applause, subdued by the courage, grace and unbending will of the girl.
In the meantime, the invisible duel, the last duel for the title of the all-around champion, the best gymnast of the Olympics, has already begun. But, in our opinion, everything has already been decided. Janz approached the bars somewhat sluggishly and indifferently. Her exercise was dynamic and very well-rehearsed, and yet, at some moment she also made a mistake, a small one, but a mistake. It was enough for the judges to give her a 9.7. A minute later — it just so happened to be the timing — Tourischeva appeared on the mat. Everything was in her hands. And she took everything into her own hands. They were the same floor exercises as the day before. But Lyuda was different. With extraordinary inspiration she went through one diagonal, and the pirouette was performed the way she had never done it before. Lightness and grace, very precise transition from one position to another — all this allowed Tourischeva to create such an integral scenic picture that no one doubted her victory any longer. The judges gave her 9.9 points. It was a score worthy of an all-around champion.
And then there was the press conference and the questions that poured like a hailstorm. For an hour, the room that was packed with journalists did not let the girls who were sitting at the table go. The questions were different — “chamber” and “large-format.” Lyuda told about the thoughts she had had about today the day before. She admitted that she had thought very calmly, without worrying at all.
Janz told in turn about herself. And then, Lazakovich was the first to answer an interesting question about the relationship between the gymnasts of the USSR and the GDR:
— We are real friends. You could all see that.
Janz looked at her and added: “I only have to confirm it.”
[Note: In Korbut’s autobiography, she said that she “had ugly, incontrovertible proof that the friendship among Soviet team members did not extend beyond the propaganda. I had missed work-outs [due to a back injury in Munich], and not a single team-mate or coach had come to check on me.”]
They were sitting side by side — the gymnasts from the USSR and the GDR. It was their evening, their celebration. They came here, having stepped down from the podium, where Tourischeva had stood on the top step, Janz on the second, and Lazakovich on the third.
Olya had not been on any step. And yet, she was sitting with them at the same table, and though her eyes were swollen with tears, they were dry. At the end of the press conference, she even cheered up when she was asked what she would do the next day in the individual events. Korbut turned round and looked at Polina Grigoryevna Astakhova; they whispered, and Astakhova answered:
— You will see that Olya made a mistake by accident and that she will not cry anymore.

И снова этот огромный зал под перепончатой сказочной крышей… Финал. Но сегодня наши девушки не вместе, их разделил жребий, смешал карты так, что сразу и не разберешь, за кем надо смотреть. И теперь гимнастки сами себе помощники, потому что ве может Астахова сразу быть в четырех углах. Она там, где ее помощь нужна больше: вот в этот самый трудный момент она рядом с Людой, которая начинает с прыжка; за Олю и Тамару, за тех сейчас можно неё волноваться, завяжешь им глаза — все равно свои вольные исполнят, как накануне, или еще лучше, потому что теперь будет труднее. Это еще вчера Корбут бросила фразу, которая родилась непосредственно от восхищения всей чудесной гимнастикой, от чудес, которые переполняли: «Интересно, когда вот так трудно». Вообще Оля при всей непосредственности и живости ставила в тупик взрослых неожиданной серьезностью фраз, сказанных при этом тоже очень серьезно. Мы еще расскажем об одном ее ответе журналистам, который был записан и повторен много раз по радио и телевидению.
Но теперь вернемся к тому моменту, когда начала, свой прыжок Турищева. Она все сделала так, словно рядом стоял ее тренер Растороцкий. Встала Люда после прыжка намертво. И уже по этому спокойному прыжку было ясно, что ее ничто 6егодня не собьет, не выведет из равновесия, что она точно все рассчитала и уже видит впереди свой коронный номер. Ведь заканчивать Турищева будет вольными, а ее соперницы в это время выйдут на брусья и бревно, где опасность срыва подстерегает за каждым поворотом извилистой, головокружительной тропинки, ведущей к пьедесталу. А ведь разделяла их самая малость.
Янц, которая шла с Турищевой рядом (у них было по 38,425), косо посматривала на бревно. Карин хмурилась, потому что жеребьевка ей не нравилась. А может быть, потому, Что только тут она почувствовала, чего ей не хватает в программе: тех самых поэтических строчек, которые переложила на движения эта девушка из Грозного. Турищева записала 9,65 после прыжка. В этот момент у Янц появилась оценка 9,4. Зал зашумел, ибо болел и за Янц, и за Турищеву, и за Корбут, и вообще публике нравилась вся эта острейшая борьба.
Но через мгновение… Впрочем, здесь мы просто отсылаем читателей к той телепередаче, которая запечатлела: произвольную программу Ольги Корбут на олимпийском ковре во вторник. Потому что описать, как уже говорилось ранее, все эти прыжки и сальто нет никакой возможности. А сейчас было еще прелестнее. Какая-то особая, неповторимая веселость, детская щедрость и взрослая храбрость и вдохновение. Судьи выставили Корбут 9,8, и она сразу стала лидером. Затем Оля прыгнула на 9,65 (как, впрочем, и Янц), а Турищева такую модную в этот вечер оценку получила: за упражнения на брусьях… И Корбут осталась в лидерах.
Они перешли к брусьям— Оля вместе с Лазакович, которая была в их группе, и еще уверенная Цухольд, для которой любые передряги нипочем. И печальная Дорнякова, которая до сих пор переживала вчерашние падения чехословацких гимнасток с бревна, падения, отбросившие команду на пятое место. У каждой здесь, на скамейке, внизу, были свои заботы…
Потом Оля Корбут объяснит все происшедшее на этих злополучных брусьях. Ответит на вопрос корреспондента Баварского радио и телевидения на пресс-конференции:
— Никогда не думала, что такое может случиться. Наверное, потому, что просто мне не хватает опыта. И кадр мне учиться, а брусья мне нравятся…
А случилось так, что уже сразу, выходя на нижнюю жердь, она задела ногами маты, затем еще раз черкнула, и все пошло кувырком. И хотя по инерции два самых сложных элемента она выполнила хорошо, особенно соскок, и хотя зал гремел восторженно, какая-то невыносимая тяжесть обрушилась на ее худенькие плечи. Оля сбежала с помоста, уткнулась Тамаре в плечо и зарыдала. 7,5 — эти цифры засветились на табло, лишая Олю ее мечты. Но тут подбежала к ней Эрика Цухольд, обняла, что-то начала шептать на ухо, но слезы застилали девочке глаза, а весь зал сочувственно вздье хал.
Ей оставался один снаряд. Она перешла к бревну, а телеоператоры потащили за ней камеру, ибо режиссер был беспощаден, он искал ее лицо крупным планом, он хотел подсмотреть ее душу; ее трагедию. А она ничего не замечала. Но надо было видеть, как аплодировал ей зрительный зал, когда она вытерла слезы и поднялась к бревну. И зал восхищался мужеством спортсменки, которая, увидев снаряд, забыла обо всем, легко вскочила на бревно и сделала все как налагается. Оценка — 9,8, и зал разражается овацией, покоренный мужеством, трацией и несгибаемой волей девушки.
А в это время невидимая дуэль, последняя дуэль за звание абсолютной, самой лучшей гимнастки Олимпиады уже началась. Но нам кажется, что все уже было решено. Янц как-то вяло, равнодушно подошла к брусьям. Упражнение у нее было темповое и очень хорошо отрепетированное, и все же в какой-то момент она тоже ошиблась, немного, но ошиблась. Этого было достаточно, чтобы судьи поставили ей 9,7. А спустя одну минуту — уж так получилось по времени — на ковре появилась Турищева. Все было в ее руках. И она все взяла в свои руки. Это были те же вольные, что и накануне. Но Люда была другая. С необычайным вдохновением она прошла одну диагональ, а пируэт был выполнен так, как еще никогда она его не делала. Легкость и изящество, очень точный переход из одного положения в другое — все это позволило Турищевой создать настолько цельную живописную картину, что победа ее уже не вызывала сомнений. 9,9 выставили ей судьи. Это была оценка, достойная абсолютной чемпионки.
А затем была пресс-конференция и вопросы, которые сыпались градом. Целый час
переполненный журналистами зал не отпускал девушек, сидевших за столом. Вопросы были разные — «камерные» и «широкоформатные». Люда рассказала о том, как она накануне думала о сегодняшнем дне. Думала очень спокойно, вовсе не волнуясь, как она призналась.
Янц рассказывала в свою очередь о себе. А потом на один интересный вопрос, какие отношения существуют между гимнастками СССР и ГДР, сначала ответила Лазакович:
— Мы дружим по-настоящему. Это вы все могли видеть.
А Янц взглянула на нее и добавила: «Мне осталось это только подтвердить».
Они сидели рядом — гимнастки СССР и ГДР. Это был их вечер, их торжество. Они пришли сюда, сойдя с пьедестала почета, на верхней ступеньке которого стояла Турищева, на второй Янц и на третьей Лазакович.
Оля ни на какой ступеньке не стояла. Но она сидела с ними за одним столом, и
хотя глаза ее припухли от слез, но были сухие. А в конце пресс-конференции она и вовсе повеселела, когда еe спросили, что она будет делать завтра во время состязаний на отдельных снарядах. Корбут оглянулась и посмотрела на Полину Григорьевну Астахову. они пошептались, и Астахова ответила:
— Вы увидите, что Оля ошиблась случайно и что она уже больше плакать не будет.
