1972: Janz and Köste Win the All-Around at the East German Championships

Four months before the Olympic Games, East Germany held its national championships. As expected, Karin Janz and Klaus Köste won the all-around titles. Behind them, you could see the Olympic team starting to take shape.

Results

Reminder: Previously, the all-around results had been determined based on the compulsory and optional scores. But that changed at the 1972 Olympics. Per the 1971 Men’s Code of Points Supplement, there would a separate all-around final. The scores were calculated by averaging the compulsory and optional scores during the qualification rounds and adding the scores during the all-around final. 

As a result, many teams chose to practice this format with one day of compulsories, one day of optionals, and one day for the all-around finals.

Commentary on the Competition

On the Women’s Compulsories

Four months before the Olympic Games, the compulsory competition of the 19 gymnasts can definitely be given a satisfactory grade. Almost all candidates for a place in the GDR Olympic team recommended themselves with good performances. The crown, however, belongs to 20-year-old Karin Janz, who has already confirmed her position as the clear favorite in this competition. With 9.60 points on vault, 9.85 points on uneven bars, and 9.70 points each on balance beam and  floor exercise, she had a brilliant streak and had the highest compulsory scores on three apparatus. The fact that her lead was still limited and that the uneven bars world champion is not yet safe from surprises in the following two optional competitions speaks to the good form of the gymnasts who placed directly behind her. (The all-around championship title is awarded according to the new regulation of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) after one compulsory and two optional competitions.) Erika Zuchold was very successful with a “9.70” on uneven bars, and with the same score on vault — a cartwheel with a one-quarter turn — she even achieved the best score of all participants in this discipline. Angelika Hellmann also completed the compulsory program without a single fault. Her evenness is to be commended, as is the case with Christine Schmitt and Marianne Noack from Rostock.

Vier Monate vor den Olympischen Spielen kann dem Pflichtwettbewerb der 19 Turnerinnen durchaus ein zufriedenstellendes Zeugnis ausgestellt werden. Nahezu alle Anwärterinnen auf einen Platz in der DDR-Olympiariege empfahlen sich mit guten Leistungen. Die Krone gebührt aber der 20jährigen Karin Janz, die bereits in dieser Konkurrenz ihre klare Favoritenstellung untermauerte. Mit 9,60 Punkten im Pferdsprung. 9,85 Punkten am Stufenbarren und je 9,70 Zählern auf dem Schwebebalken und im Bodenturnen hatte sie eine glänzende Serie und turnte an drei Geräten die höchsten Pflichtnoten. Daß ihr Vorsprung dennoch in Grenzen blieb und die Stufenbarren-Weltmeisterin auch in den folgenden beiden Kürwettbewerben — der Mehrkampf-meistertitel wird nach der neuen Regelung der Internationalen Turnföderation (FIG) eist nach einer Pflicht- und zwei Kür-Konkurrenzen vergeben — vor Ueberraschungen noch nicht sicher ist, spricht für die gute Form der unmittelbar hinter ihr plazierten Turnerinnen. Erika Zuchold besann mit einer ,,9,70″ auf dem Stufenbarren und erreichte mit der gleichen Note im Pferdsprune einem eincpspruncenen Rad mit einer Vierteldrehung — sogar den besten Wert aller Teilnehmerinnen in dieser Disziplin. Auch Angelika Hellmann absolvierte das Pflichtprogramm ohne Tadel. Bei ihr gilt es ebenso wie bei den Rostockerinnen Christine Schmitt und Marianne Noack die Gleichmäßigkeit zu loben.

The defending champions lead sovereignly after compulsories and optionals

Reinhard Rychly from ASK Vorwärts Potsdam was beaming. Whatever happens during the all-around final of the gymnastics championships in Gera’s Erwin-Panndorf-Halle, the winner of the Spartakiade in 1970 has proven with his performances in compulsory and optionals that he, like his teammate Wolfgang Klotz, has now succeeded in making it into the top group of GDR gymnasts.

He already laid the foundation for success on the third optional apparatus with a cleanly performed rings routine, which ended with a double twist dismount and brought him 9.50 points and initially fourth place in the overall ranking. In the next round, Reinhard outperformed Matthias Brehme, who was suffering more and more from back pain, and finally his clubmate Wolfgang Klotz in the final horizontal bar routine.

Klaus Köste, however, proved with a well-balanced overall performance — only the score for the not quite mastered handspring front on vault fell a little with a 9.05 — that he has achieved good form again.

And that is probably the most positive result of the gymnastics championships in 1972 so far: Behind Klaus Köste, Reinhard Rychly, Wolfgang Klotz, Jürgen Paeke and Bernd Jäger are fighting hard for the better ranking, which will certainly only be decided on the last apparatus.

Overall, our female gymnasts show a slower pace of development. However, one mustn’t overlook the fact that the World silver medalist is closer to the top of the world than our men, and in some respects they even play a role in determining it. Behind Karin Janz, who with four times 9.80 in the optional competition is truly a master, and who, just as unchallenged as Klaus Köste, is heading for another title win, Erika Zuchold and Angelika Hellmann are already showing a fairly stable performance. But while Marianne Noack proved her improvement in form, and the young Dynamo gymnast Irene Abel was emulating her two friends Karin and Angelika more and more successfully, Sabine Leffs and last year’s winner of the DTV Cup, Hannelore Kadolph, were disappointing.

Die Titelverteidiger führen souverän nach Pflicht und Kür

Reinhard Rychly vom ASK Vorwärts Potsdam strahlte. Wie auch das Mehrkampffinale der Turnmeisterschaften in der Geraer Erwin-Panndorf-Halle ausfallen wird, der Spartakiadesieger von 1970 hat mit seinen Leistungen in der Pflicht und Kür bewiesen, daß ihm ebenso wie seinem Mannschaftskameraden wolfgang Klotz der Sprung in die Spitzengruppe der DDR-Turner nun gelungen ist.

Den Grundstock zum Erfolg legte er bereits am dritten Kürgerät mit einer sauber geturnten Ringeubung, die mit einem Doppelmuhlenabgang endete und ihm 9.-50 Punkte sowie zunächst Platz vier in der Gesamtwertung brachte. Im nächsten Durchgang überflügelte Reinhard den immer mehr abfallenden, von Rückenschmerzen geplagten Matthias Brehme und schließlich beim abschließenden Reckturnen auch noch seinen Klubkameraden Wolfgang Klotz.

Klaus Köste aber bewies mit einer ausgeglichen guten Gesamtleistung — lediglich die Bewertung für den noch nicht ganz beherrschten Überschlag mit anschließendem Salto beim Pferdsprung fiel mit 9.05 etwas ab — , daß er wieder eine gute Form erreicht hat.

Und das ist wohl das bisher positivste Ergebnis dieser Turnmeisterschaften 1972 : Hinter Klaus Köste liefern sich Reinhard Rychly, Wolfgang Klotz, Jürgen Paeke und Bernd Jäger einen harten Kampf um die bessere Plazierung, der sicher erst am letzten Gerät entschieden wird.

Bei unseren Turnerinnen ergibt sich im Gesamtbild ein geringeres Entwicklungstempo. Allerdings darf man dabei nicht übergehen, daß der Vizeweltmeister näher an der Weltspitze steht als unsere Männer, ja sie in mancher Hinsicht mitbestimmt. Hinter der mit viermal 9,80 im Kürwettbewerb wahrhaft meisterlich turnenden Karin Janz, die ebenso ungefährdet wie Klaus Koste dem neuerlichen Titelgewinn zustrebt, zeigen Erika Zuchold und Angelika Hellmann bereits ein ziemlich stabiles Leistungsbild. Doch während Marianne Noack ihren Formanstieg bewies und die junge Dynamo-Turnerin Irene Abel ihren beiden Freundinnen Karin und Angelika immer erfolgreicher nacheifert, enttäuschten beispielsweise Sabine Leffs und die Gewinnerin des DTV-Pokals vom Vorjahr, Hannelore Kadolph.

Stability was a much overused word during these gymnastics championships in 1972 in the Erwin-Panndorf-Halle in Gera. The new Olympic format used for the first time, which requires every active participant to do gymnastics twice in the optional program, places this aspect particularly in the foreground. Stability means doing gymnastics three times with as few mistakes as possible on each piece of equipment, safely bringing the difficult dismounts from the apparatus and vaults to a standstill, conquering the balance beam or pommel horse three times without wobbling or “dismounting.” Certainly a high requirement, but without its fulfillment in the value competition the Olympic grapes hang very high.

In addition to uneven bars champion Karin Janz, who won the championship title again by nearly two points over runner-up Erika Zuchold, Angelika Hellmann was the most impressive in the women’s category to meet this requirement. Already in the compulsory competition, she had an average score of almost 9.50. If you take the average of all 12 routines on the four apparatus, there is still a good 9.40, with the lowest score being 9.35. The long-legged Berlin Dynamo gymnast has thus further consolidated her place in the top trio of the best GDR gymnasts, especially since the distance between and Erika Zuchold, who had to leave the beam in the all-around final (8.05), this time amounted to just under a tenth of a point.

One level lower — i.e. with a lower average score — one can fortunately also award the rating of “stable” this time to Marianne Noack from SC Empor Rostock — three tenths of a point away from third — and the young Dynamo gymnast Irene Abel, who was able to repeat her sixth-place finish from the previous year.

In terms of stability, things are less favorable for our men than for women. Above all, the “executioner” pommel horse claimed its victims even from the best. Starting with our now 27-time GDR champion Klaus Köste, who safely defended his title with a lead of 2.325 points over Jürgen Päke, but was only able to collect 8.70 points on the compulsory horse routine. The rings in the compulsory competition were fatal for the new runner-up from SC Dynamo Berlin, and Wolfgang Klotz, third in the championship, was thrown off the horse twice. No one kept a clean slate here.

In the same breath, however, one must mention many good fighting performances. Full of concentration, Jürgen Pake, for example, relegated Wolfgang Klotz from Potsdam to third place by a hair’s breadth in the all-around final, Lothar Müßig excelled on parallel bars and horizontal bar and jumped from sixth to fourth place, and the young Reinhard Rychly desperately defended his good starting position from the qualifications against the “older” gymnasts and was able to secure fifth place in the championship despite decreasing strength. Matthias Brehme, who had already performed compulsories and optionals in pain and used a lot of willpower, did not compete in the all-around final due to a back injury.

Stabilität war ein viel strapaziertes Wort während diese Turnmeisterschaften 1972 In der Erwin-Panndorf-Halle von Gera, Der erstmals angewandte neue olympische Austragungsmodus, der von jedem Aktiven das zweimalige Turnen des Kürprogramms fordert, rückt diesen Gesichtspunkt besonders In den Vordergrund. Stabilität, das bedeutet, an jedem Gerät dreimal möglichst fehlerfrei zu turnen, die schwierigen Geräteabgänge und Sprünge sicher zum Stand zu bringen, Schwebebalken oder Seitpferd ohne Wackler oder »Absteiger” dreimal zu bezwingen. Sicher eine hohe Forderung, aber ohne ihre Erfüllung im Wertkampf werden die olympischen Trauben sehr hoch hängen.

Neben Stufenbarren-Weltmelsterln Karin Janz, die mit fast zwei Punkten Abstand zur Vizemeisterin Erika Zuchold wieder souverän den Meistertitel gewann, gelang es bei den Frauen am eindrucksvollsten Angelika Hellmann, dieser Forderung gerecht zu werden. Bereits im Pflichtwettbewerb wies sie einen Notendurchschnitt von knapp 9,50 auf. Nimmt man das Mittel aller 12 Übungen an den vier Geräten, bleiben immer noch reichlich 9,40, wobei die niedrigste Note 9,35 lautete. Die langbeinige Berliner Dynamo-Turnerin hat damit ihren Platz im Spitzentrio der besten DDR-Turnerinnen weiter gefestigt, zumal ihr Abstand zu Erika Zuchold. die beim Mehrkampffinal« den Balken verlassen mußte (8,05), diesmal nur einen knappen Zehntelpunkt betrug.

Eine Stufe tiefer – also mit einem geringeren Notendurchschnitt — darf man das Prädikat „stabil” diesmal erfreulicherweise auch Marianne Noack vom SC Empor Rostock  — Abstand zur Dritten drei Zehntelpunkte  — und der jungen Dynamo-Turnerin Irene Abel zubilligen, die damit ihren sechsten Platz vom Vorjahr wiederholen konnte.

Weniger günstig als bei den Frauen sieht es un puncto Stabilität bei unseren Männern aus. Vor allem „Scharfrichter” Seitpferd forderte selbst bei den Besten seine Opfer. Angefangen von unserem nun schon 27fachen DDR-Meister Klaus Köste, der seinen Titel mit 2,325 Punkten Vorsprung vor Jürgen Päke sicher verteidigte, aber in der Pferdpflicht nur 8,70 Punkte kassieren konnte. Dem neuen Vizemeister vom SC Dynamo Berlin wurden die Ringe im Pflichtwettbewerb zum Verhängnis, und Wolfgang Klotz, der Meisterschaftsdritte, wurde gleich zweimal vom Pferd .abgeworfen”. Keiner behielt hier eine saubere Weste.

Im gleichen Atemzuge muß man aber viele gute kämpferische Leistungen konstatieren. Jürgen Pake zum Beispiel verwies voller Konzentration im Mehrkampffinale noch den Potsdamer Wolfgang Klotz hauchdünn auf Platz drei, Lothar Müßig trumpfte an Barren und Reck auf und sprang vom sechsten auf den vierten Rang, und der junge Reinhard Rychly verteidigte gegen die „Größeren” verzweifelt seine gute Ausgangsposition vom Zwölfkampf und konnte sich trotz nachlassender Kraft noch den fünften Meisterschaftsplatz sichern. Matthias Brehme, der bereits in Pflicht und Kür unter Schmerzen geturnt hatte und viel Willenskraft einsetzte, trat beim Mehrkampffinale wegen einer Rückenverletzung nicht mehr an.

Gymnastics championships ended with the apparatus finals

The final to determine the champions on the individual apparatus formed the conclusion of the year’s gymnastics championships. For four days, the 19 gymnasts had to compete in compuslory, optional, and final competitions for the crown of gymnastics champion and for places in the narrower circle of candidates for the XXth Olympic Games.

FLOOR

Klaus Köste entered the final with the highest qualifying score. His strongest rivals, Joachim Rühle (DHfK) and Wolfgang Klotz (ASK), did not regard his routine as outstanding, but he did it cleanly — and the score: 9.25. They particularly tried to win tenths of a point in the difficult passes with double twists. In the end, all three had the same score, the higher qualifying score determined the winner.

RINGS

The ring final brought excellent performances and only one failure: Wolfgang Klotz ran out of strength on the way, but only two of the six finalists persuaded the judges to give additional tenths for the originality, risk, and virtuosity of the routine over and above the maximum value (9.40).

Klaus will certainly be happiest about this title: he was already able to achieve a model streak in the all-around (9.75, 9.70, 9.65). Now a heavyweight 9.55 was added in the final.

HIGH BAR

The European champion on this apparatus had to resist the toughest competition. He didn’t even have the highest qualifying score. The young Rychly was 25 hundredths ahead of him, but the gymnast from Leipzig did his routine like a picture book: 9.80 — the highest score for men.

VAULT

Vault was the only discipline in which Klaus Köste did not make it to the final, but Lutz Mack represented him worthily.

With an overall rather weak performance, the pommel horse final went over the stage. Klaus Köste was the only one to score more than nine points, and thanks to his better qualifying score, Jürgen Päke was also able to win the title with a straight 9.0.

Turnmeisterschaften gingen mit dem Gerätefinale zu Ende

Das Finale zur Ermittlung der Meister an den Einzelgeräten bildete den Abschluß der dlesjährigen Turnmeisterschaften. Vier Tage lang hatten die 19 Turnerinnen und Turner In Pflicht-, Kür- und Finalwettbewerben um die Krone des Turnmeisters sowie um Plätze im engeren Kandldätenkreis für die XX. Olympischen Spiele gekämpft.

BODEN

Klaus Koste ging mit dem höchsten Vorwert ins Finale. Seine stärksten Rivalen, Joachim Rühle (DHfK) und Wolfgang Klotz (ASK), sahen seine Übung nicht überragend, aber sauber geturnt — und die Note: 9,25. Sie versuchten besonders, in den schwierigen Sprungreihen mit doppelten Mühlen Zehntelpunkte zu gewinnen, Am Ende hatten alle drei die gleiche Note, der höhere Ausgangswert entschied.

RINGE

Das Ringefinale brachte hervorragende Leistungen und nur einen einzigen Versager: Wolfgang Klotz gingen unterwegs die Kräfte aus, doch nur zwei der sechs Finalisten bewogen die Kampfrichter, über den Höchstwert (9,40) hinaus Zusatzzehntel für. Originalität, Risiko und virtuose Darbietung der Übung zu geben.

1. Köste – 19,025, 2. Grosse (SC DHfK Leipzig) 18,850, 3. Rychly (ASK) 18.650.

BARREN

Über diesen Titel wird sich Klaus sicher am meisten freuen: Er konnte bereits im Mehrkampf eine Musterserie erzielen (9,75, 9,70, 9,65). Nun kam eine schwer- gewichtige 9,55 im Finale hinzu.

RECK

Der Europameister an diesem Gerät, hatte sich härtester Konkurrenz zu erwehren. Er hatte nicht einmal den höchsten Vorwert. Der junge Rychly lag hier 25 Hundertstelpunkte vor Ihm, doch der Leipziger turnte seine Übung wie aus dem Bilderbuch: 9,80 – die Höchstnote bei den Männern.

1. Koste 19,275, 2. Müßig 18,925, 3. Hanschke (SC Chemie Halle) 18,750.

SPRUNG

Der Pferdsprung war die einzige Disziplin, wo Klaus Koste nicht ins Finale gekommen war, Doch Lutz Mack vertrat ihn würdig.

SEITPFERD

Mit Insgesamt recht schwachen Leistungen ging das Seitpferdfinale über die Bühne. Klaus Koste turnte als einziger über neun Punkte, und glatt 9,0 reichten auch Jürgen Pake dank seines besseren Ausgangswertes zum Titelgewinn.

Karin and Erika shared the titles

VAULT

Erika Zuchold already showed on vault that she did not intend to leave Gera without a championship title. She did not embark on any experiment and vaulted her famous easy Yamashita with great precision.

UNEVEN BARS

As far as previous scores and ability are concerned, uneven bars world champion Karin Janz should have won the title again on “her” apparatus. But here, of all places, the Berliner almost missed twice. Perhaps she had become insecure because of Erika’s gymnastics in front of her.This is because she wasn’t impressed by Karin’s higher qualifying score and had already achieved the second 9.85 super score before the world champion.

BEAM

This time Karin Janz took precedence in the rankings. With 9.60 she didn’t get a very high score, but Erika would have had to do 9.85 again to become champion.

FLOOR

The final on the mat was one of the highlights of this championship. Our girls proved that they made significant progress in the pleasing performance of gymnastic and acrobatic elements.

Was Vorwert und Können anbetrifft, hätte Stufenbarren-Weltmeisterin Karin Janz an „ihrem” Gerät eigentlich zum erneuten Titelgewinn kommen müssen. Doch ausgerechnet hier faßte die Berlinerin zweimal fast daneben. Vielleicht war sie durch die vor ihr turnende Erika unsicher geworden. Diese nämlich ließ sich auch von Karins höherem Vorwert nicht beeindrucken und hatte sich vor der Weltmeisterin bereits die zweite 9,85-Supernote erturnt.

SCHWEBEBALKEN

Ellen Berger’s and Larisa Latyina’s Thoughts on the Performances

Four months before the Olympic Games, positive moments prevailed at the GDR Gymnastics Championships in Gera. This applies particularly to the women. The distance between Karin Janz and Erika Zuchold has decreased, the active players placed behind the two best GDR gymnasts have moved closer. Erika Zuchold was able to secure the runner-up title in the all-around with only a wafer-thin lead over Angelika Hellmann. “Angelika Hellmann, Irene Abel, Ricarda Schmeißer, Sylvia Schäfer, Christine Schmitt, and also Marianne Noack all came up with good performances. Irene Abel improved her expression in compulsories and optionals, Ricarda Schmeißer had an excellent optionals, must still improve in terms of compulsories,” asessed GDR association trainer Ellen Berger. With the eight gymnasts mentioned so far as well as Beate Gehrke and Hannelore Kadolph, the DTV of the GDR will continue to prepare for the Olympics. With these ten gymnasts, an extremely cohesive Olympic squad can be formed. The improvements in floor exercise were particularly noticeable “Here a decisive change in style was achieved, because the routines can hardly be compared with those of earlier years,” praised the many-time Soviet Olympic champion Larissa Latynina, the most prominent guest of the Gera championships. Of course, there is still a lot to do in the coming months. The stability did not always meet the highest requirements. Even Erika Zuchold, in the second optional routine on the balance beam, and Karin Janz, in the final on uneven bars, had bobbles.

Vier Monate vor den Olympischen Spielen überwogen bei den DDR-Turnmeisterschaften in Gera die positiven Momente. Das trifft besonders auf die Frauen zu. Der Abstand zu Karin Janz und Erika Zuchold ist geringer geworden, die hinter den beiden besten DDR-Turnerinnen plazierten Aktiven sind dichter herangerückt. Erika Zuchold konnte sogar nur mit hauchdünnem Vorsprung vor Angelika Hellmann den Vizemeistertitel im Mehrkampf ins Ziel retten. „Angelika Hellmann, Irene Abel, Ricarda Schmeißer, Sylvia Schäfer, Christine Schmitt und auch Marianne Noack warteten durchaus mit guten Leistungen auf. Irene Abel hat sich In Pflicht und Kür vor allem ausdrucksmäßig stark verbessert, Ricarda Schmeißer turnte eine ausgezeichnete Kür. muß sich allerdings in der Pflicht noch verbessern”, schätzte DDR-Verbandstrainerin Ellen Berger ein. Mit den bisher genannten acht Turnerinnen sowie mit Beate Gehrke und Hannelore Kadolph wird der DTV der DDR die weiteren Olympiavorbereitungen bestreiten. Man darf schon letzt sicher sein, daß aus dem Kreis dieser zehn Turnerinnen eine äußerst geschlossen wirkende Olympiariege gebildet werden kann. Besonders auffällig waren die Verbesserungen im Bodenturnen „Hier wurde ein entscheidender Stilwandel erzielt, denn die Uebungen sind kaum noch mit denen früherer Jahre zu vergleichen”, lobte die oftmalige sowjetische Olympiasiegerin Larissa Latynina. der prominenteste Gast der Geraer Titelkämpfe. Freilich gibt es in den kommenden Monaten noch viel zu tun. Die Stabilität entsprach noch nicht immer allerhöchsten Anforderungen. Selbst Erika Zuchold, in der zweiten Kür auf dem Schwebebalken, und Karin Janz, im Finale am Stufenbarren, leisteten sich Schnitzer.

Final Thoughts on the Men’s Performances

The men presented extremely difficult elements in close succession, but these elements were often not yet mastered. This is especially true for the routines on pommel horse, which often had to be ended prematurely. “The routines have increased in difficulty. This development can be seen as positive, because the degree of difficulty can definitely stand up to the international standard. In terms of perfection, posture, and stability, there are of course still shortcomings that we must and can remedy in the coming months,” emphasized the GDR association trainer Peter Weber. However, the fact that nine gymnasts follow behind Klaus Koste in the all-around, separated by quite small differences, must be seen as a positive moment. Especially Jürgen Paeke, Wolfgang Klotz, Reinhard Rychly, Bernd Jäger and Lothar Müßig are well on their way to catch up. However, the large gap to Klaus Koste clearly proves that one cannot yet speak of a stable performance pattern. Apart from the six active players already mentioned, Wolfgang Thüne, who is still injured; Matthias Brehme, who withdrew due to a back injury after the first optional; Joachim Rühl, and Rainer Hanschke are among the candidates for a place on the Olympic team.

Die Männer boten extreme Schwierigkeiten in dichter Folge, doch wurden diese Elemente oft noch nicht gemeistert. Das trifft besonders auf die Uebungen am Seitpferd zu. die nicht selten vorzeitig beendet werden mußten. „Die Uebungen wurden im Schwierigkeitsgrad aufgestockt. Diese Entwicklung ist als positiv zu bewerten, denn der Schwierigkeitsgrad kann mit dem internationalen Standard durchaus standhalten. In der Perfektion, der Haltung und der Stabilität gibt es freilich noch Mängel, die wir in den kommenden Monaten abstellen müssen und auch können”, betonte der DDR-Verbandstrainer Peter Weber. Als positives Moment ist allerdings die Tatsache zu werten, daß im Mehrkampf hinter Klaus Koste neun Turner folgen, die nur durch recht geringe Abstände getrennt sind. Vor allem Jürgen Paeke, Wolfgang Klotz, Reinhard Rychly, Bernd Jäger und Lothar Müßig sind auf dem besten Wege dazu, den Anschluß zu finden. Der große Abstand zu Klaus Koste beweist allerdings deutlich, daß man noch nicht von einem stabilen Leistungsbild sprechen kann. Außer den bereits erwähnten sechs Aktiven gehören der noch verletzte Wolfgang Thüne, der wegen einer Rückenverletzung nach der ersten Kür ausgeschiedene Matthias Brehme, Joachim Rühle und Rainer Hanschke zu den Kandidaten für einen Platz in der Olymipiariege.
