1972: Korbut and Andrianov Win the USSR Cup

Months earlier, in April, Ludmilla Tourischeva and Nikolai Andrianov won the 1972 Soviet Championships — both with errors. At the 1972 Soviet Cup, Tourischeva had another mistake, and this time, Olga Korbut was able to capitalize on it and win the competition. As for Andrianov, he further cemented his position as the top Soviet gymnast heading into the Olympics.

Results

Reminder: Previously, the all-around results had been determined based on the compulsory and optional scores. But that changed at the 1972 Olympics. Per the 1971 Men’s Code of Points Supplement, there would be a separate all-around final, which could be calculated by averaging the compulsory and optional scores during the qualification round and adding the scores during the all-around final. 

As a result, many teams chose to practice this format with one day of compulsories, one day of optionals, and one day for the all-around finals.

THE WINNERS ARE WAITING FOR THE OLYMPIAD

On June 29, under the arches of the Sports Palace, which is very cool these days, the strongest gymnasts began performing, competing for the National Cup and the titles of champions of the USSR in the individual apparatus finals.

Simultaneously with the cup draw, there will be a dispute for the medals of the national champions in individual apparatus. These competitions have a history since 1939. There are “record holders” here. 21 times, Galina Urbanovich won the title of champion in various forms. 14 champion awards for Viktor Lisitsky in various forms. 

The chief judge of the competition, the judge of the international category, P. Stolbov, said that 32 women and 36 men will take part in the competition. — We are also going to arrange a general review, — said the senior coach of the USSR men’s national team V. Smolevsky.— An acute struggle for the cup, in my opinion, will unfold between N. Andrianov, V. Klimenko, and M. Voronin. V. Schukin, S. Diomidov, A. Maleev, and other gymnasts will also lead the sport for the medals of the national champions.

After the first day of the competition (compulsory program), the gymnasts are ahead of the all-around world champion Ludmilla Tourischeva — 37.8 points. She got the best results (9.6 points each) on the uneven bars and on floor exercise.

For men, the compulsory program was brilliantly performed by the absolute champion of the country Nikolai Andrianov. He leads after the first day — 56.65 points.

Одновременно с розыгрышем кубков пойдет спор за медали чемпионов страны в отдельных видах гимнастического многоборья. Эти состязания ведут историю с 1939 года. Здесь есть свои «рекордсмены». O. Korbut and N. Andrianov — winners of the USSR Cups in Gymnastics in 1972

The friendly and anxious sigh of the tribunes had not yet had time to freeze under the arches of the Sports Palace, and Ludmilla Tourishcheva was already standing on the treacherous beam again. Yes, the world champion and three-time winner of the USSR Cup had to climb on this apparatus for the second time: she lost her balance, and with it precious fractions of a point.

– Nine points, — Tourishcheva’s assessment for the performance on the beam, — the informant judge announced, almost with regret in his voice.

At first, nothing foreshadowed such “surprises.” The gymnasts were the first to open the final all-around competition for the USSR Cup on Sunday. After two days, L. Tourischeva was confidently in the lead. She also started well in the finals: vault — 9.5, uneven bars — 9.65. In addition, suddenly an annoying failure on balance beam.

The fight for the championship immediately escalated. Having received 9.7 points on the beam, O. Korbut became the leader. Moreover, she brilliantly performed the complex element of a “backflip.” Tourischeva tried to catch up on floor exercise. And indeed, here, she received the highest score of the tournament — 9.8 points, but O. Korbut, having performed floor with 9.6 points, was already out of reach. This led her to win the National Cup for the first time. In total, she scored 76.275 points in the all-around. L. Turishcheva took second place — 76,125, T. Lazakovich took third place — 75.9.

Olga Korbut is 17 years old. She is a graduate of one of the secondary schools in Grodno. Her coach is R. Knysh, Olga is a master of sports of international class. For the first time, the coaches of the national team drew attention to her during the international Moscow competition “Olympic Hopes” in 1969. And two years later O. Korbut became the champion of the V Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR in the team competition and the winner on the uneven bars in the individual competition. At the last USSR Championship, O. Korbut won a bronze medal in the all-around.

When the best eight gymnasts are brought into a line, Olya takes her place on the left flank — she is the smallest in height. However, on Sunday she stood above everyone on the podium.

— Really, I didn’t think much about winning, — Olya said after the speeches.

— I did not even see how Luda Turishchev fell from the beam. I just really wanted to perform as well as possible. Perform the way you do in training. Today I am very happy and dream of a good performance at the Olympics.

There were no surprises in the men’s competition. Confidently leading after the preliminary competitions, the absolute champion of the country N. Andrianov confirmed his skills in the final competitions. He won the national Cup with a score of 112.95 points. V. Klimenko took second place — 111.95. M. Voronin took third place — 111.925.

So, the cups of the country are over. Now the gymnasts are starting a dispute for the title of national champions on individual apparatus.

Поначалу ничто не предвещало таких «сюрпризов». Первыми в воскресенье открыли финальные соревнования по многоборью за Кубок СССР гимнастки. После двух дней уверенно лидировала Л. Турищева. Хорошо начала она и выступления в финале: прыжок — 9,5, брусья — 9,65. И вдруг досадная неудача на бревне.
 
Борьба за первенство сразу же обострилась. Получив на бревне 9,7 балла, в лидеры вышла О. Корбут. Причем она блеском исполнила сложный элемент «сальто назад». Турищева пыталась наверстать упущенное в вольных упражнениях. И действительно, здесь она получила высшую оценку турнира — 9,8 балла, но О. Корбут, выполнив вольные на 9,6 балла, оказалась уже недосягаема. Это поводило ей впервые выиграть Кубок страны. В сумме многоборья она набрала 76,275 балла. Второе место у Л. Турищевой — 76,125, на третьем — Т. Лазакович — 75,9.
 
Ольге Корбут 17 лет. Она выпускница одной из средних школ Гродно. Ее тренер — Р. Кныш, Ольга мастер спорта международного класса. Впервые тренеры сборной страны обратили на нее снимание во время международных московских соревнований «Олимпийские надежды» 1969 года. А через два года О. Корбут стала чемпионкой V Спартакиады народов СССР в командном зачете и победительницей на брусьях в личном турнире. На последнем чемпионате СССР О. Корбут завоевала бронзовую медаль в многоборье.
 
Когда лучшую восьмерку гимнастов выводят на построение, Оля занимает место на левом фланге — по росту она самая маленькая. Но в воскресенье она стояла выше всех на пьедестале почета.
 
— Право, я особенно и не думала о победе, — сказала после выступлений Оля.
 
— Я даже не видела, как упала с бревна Люда Турищева. Мне просто очень хотелось наи можно лучше выступить. Выступить так, как это получается на тренировках. Сегодня я очень рада и мечтаю о хорошем выступлении на Олимпиаде.
 
В турнире гимнастов неожиданностей не произошло. Уверенно лидировавший после
предварительных состязаний абсолютный чемпион страны Н. Андрианов подтвердил свое мастерство и в финальных соревнованиях. Он стал обладателем кубка страны с результатом 112,95 балла. Второе место у В. Клименко — 111,95. Третье место у М. Воронина — 111,925.
 
Итак, кубки страны разыграны. Теперь гимнасты начинают спор за звания чемпионов страны на отдельных снарядах.

After the Women’s Event Finals: Latynina Essentially Names Elvira Saadi to the Team

Reminder: Saadi was 8th at the USSR Championships and 5th at the USSR Cup.

TWO MEDALS EACH.

The titles of national champions on individual apparatuses were contested in the evening of July 3 in Luzhniki by eight athletes who had shown the best results in the preliminary competitions. Winning points were added up from the preliminary result and the final performance.

Ludmilla Tourischeva had the best preliminary result (9.525) before the beginning of the competition. In the finals, her best vault was evaluated at 9.55 points, which earned her the gold medal as the USSR champion in vault. Her final score was 19.075. With a total of 19.4 points, Ludmilla also won her second gold medal on uneven bars as the national champion.

Now I would like to get a little head of myself. Immediately after the end of the gymnasts’ competition journalists gathered in the press center for another press conference and vied with each other to ask the head coach of the women’s national team L. Latynina whether such a brilliant performance of Elvira Saadi, who last night became the national champion in the remaining two events, balance beam (19.225) and floor exercise (19.3), was not a surprise for her.

— It was not a surprise for us, — said the head coach of the national team, — I can add to it that at these competitions Elvira has gone from a real candidate for the Olympic team for a trip to Munich into a full member of the Olympic team of the country.

What were the preliminary results of the women’s competitions? According to the coaches, gymnastics specialists, they became a dress rehearsal before the Olympic tournament. The young O. Korbut, the winner of the National Cup and two silver medals of the USSR Championship (on uneven bars and beam), earned special praise, E. Saadi performed well, L. Burda, T. Lazakovich, T. Schegolkova, A. Koshel demonstrated mature skills. The coaches will name the final composition of the national team after the tournament of the ten strongest gymnasts, which will be held on July 27 at the Minsk Sports Palace.

Звания чемпионок страны на отдельных снарядах вечером 3 июля в Лужниках оспаривали по восемь спортсменок, показавших лучшие результаты в предварительных соревнованиях. Победные баллы слагались из предварительного результата и итога финального выступления.

Так вот, у Людмилы Турищевой перед началом прыжков (с них начались соревнования) был лучший предварительный результат (9,525). В финале лучший ее прыжок был оценен в 9,55 балла, что и принесло ей золотую медаль чемпионки СССР в прыжке. Ее окончательный результат — 19,075. С общей суммой 19,4 балла Людмила завоевала на брусьях и вторую золотую медаль чемпионки страны.

Теперь мне хотелось бы несколько опередить события. Сразу же по окончании соревнований гимнасток журналисты, собравшиеся в пресс-центре на очередную пресс-конференцию, наперебой спрашивали старшего тренера женской сборной СССР Л. Латынину, не было ли для нее неожиданностью столь блистательное выступление Эльвиры Саади, ставшей прошедшим вечером чемпионкой страны в двух оставшихся видах: бревне (19,225) а в вольных упражнениях (19,3).

— Это не было для нас сюрпризом,— сказала старший тренер сборной,—Могу добавить к этому, что на этих состязаниях Эльвира из реального кандидата ч олимпийскую сборную на поездку а Мюнхен превратилась в полноправного члена олимпийской сборной страны.

Каковы же предварительные итоги состязаний женщин? По мнению тренеров, специалистов гимнастики, они стали генеральной репетицией перед олимпийским турниром. Особых похвал заслужили юная О. Корбут — обладательница Кубка страны и двух серебряных медалей чемпионата СССР (на брусьях и бревне), отлично выступила Э. Саади, зрелое мастерство продемонстрировали Л. Бурда, Т. Лазакович, Т. Щеголькова, А. Кошель. Окончательный состав сборной страны тренеры назовут после турнира десяти сильнейших гимнасток, который пройдет 27 июля в минском Дворце спорта.

After the Men’s Event Finals

PARTING BEFORE THE OLYMPICS

Immediately after the performance of gymnasts on the last apparatus – the high bar, which ended the men’s championship of the USSR on individual apparatuses, we talked to the European champion V. Klimenko. He earned three out of six medals on the Luzhniki gymnastics stage: on vault (18.775), on pommel horse (18.95), and on parallel bars (18.775).

At the end of last year, V. Klimenko injured his leg. Many began to speculate that it would be difficult for him to get back on track. Klimenko came back to the gymnastics stage.

— This tournament was the first serious test of my strength after a long break, said Klimenko. The injury does not bother me anymore. Of course, I am happy for my success. I think that before the Olympics I will not make any changes in my program. I will only polish my routines.

N. Andrianov won two gold medals champion of the USSR – in floor exercise and in the competition on high bar. M. Voronin won on the rings.

— The main candidates for the Olympic team – said, summarizing the results of competitions in Luzhniki head of the department of gymnastics Sports Committee of the USSR Yu. Сразу же по окончании выступлений гимнастов на последнем снаряде — перекладине, которыми завершался мужской чемпионат СССР на отдельных снарядах, мы разговорились с чемпионом Европы В. Клименко. Три из шести разыгрываемых медалей завоевал он на гимнастическом помосте Лужников: в опорных прыжках (18,775 балла), на коне (18,95) и на брусьях (18.775).
 
В конце прошлого года В. Клименко травмировал ногу. Многие начали поговаривать, что ему трудно будет вернуться в строй. Клименко вернулся на гимнастический помост.
 
— Для меня, — рассказывает В. Клименко, —этот турнир был первой по-настоящему серьезной проверкой сил после долгого перерыва. Травма меня больше не беспокоит. Конечно, я рад успеху. Думаю, что до Олимпиады никаких
изменений в программу своих упражнений вносить не буду. Займусь только шлифовкой комбинаций.

— Основными кандидатами в олимпийскую команду, — сказал, подводя итоги соревнованиям в Лужниках начальник отдела гимнастики Спорткомитета СССР Ю. Титов, —являются опытные В. Клименко, Н. Андрианов, М. Воронин и молодые гимнасты Э. Микаэлян, В. Щукин. А. Малеев. Мы давно не имели такой сильной и молодой (в сборной три 20-летних спортсмена: Щукин. Микаэлян, Андрианов) команды.
 
Несколько слов о судьях. Среди арбитров, приглашенных обслуживать олимпийский турнир, будут прославленные в прошлом советские гимнасты — Л. Иванова и Т. Демиденко, Б. Шахлин, А. Азарян. По мнению этих арбитров, а они, надо сказать, судили здесь даже строже, чем зто будет на олимпиаде, турнир в Лужниках удался на славу и показал, что наши гимнасты находятся в хорошей спортивной форме.

Larisa Latynina, the head coach of the Soviet team, was not the only person who praised Elvira Saadi. After the event finals at the USSR Cup, Saadi was the topic of conversation. Here’s what Manina had to say:

– Special requirements for gymnasts’ exercises were developed for these competitions, which are much stricter than the international ones. The routines of Korbut, Lazakovich, Bogdanova quite meet, so to speak, the international standard. But we wanted the athletes to try to show the most perfect compositions, maybe not of today, but of tomorrow. It is not a problem that some gymnasts did not receive the same scores as they had in the Cup finals. But the girls will know that they have untapped reserves.

Saadi’s composition is the most successful of all. Elia happily combined both high jumps, balances, and complex turns in relevé, and most importantly, it was all performed unusually expressively.

— К этим соревнованиям были разработаны специальные требования к упражнениям гимнасток, которые значительно строже международных. Комбинации Корбут, Лазакович, Богдановой вполне отвечают, так сказать, международному стандарту. Но мы хотели, чтобы спортсменки стремились показать самые совершенные композиции, может, не сегодняшнего; а завтрашнего дня. Ничего страшного, что некоторые гимнастки получили баллы не такие, какие они имели в, финале Кубка. Зато девушки будут знать, что у них есть неиспользованные резервы.

Композиция Саади — самая удачная из всех. Эля счастливо сочетала и высокие прыжки, и равновесия, и сложные повороты на высоком носке, а главное, все это было выполнено необыкновенно выразительно.

– Saadi’s “Polichinelle” [by Rachmaninoff]… This composition touched me to the bottom of my heart. Elia is very musical, and her technique is perfect. When the musical accompaniment coincides with the movements of a gymnast, then one can speak of perfection. That’s what I saw with Saadi.

Here’s what Boris Shakhlin had to say. (Shakhlin was the head judge on vault at the 1972 Olympics.)

I asked our renowned gymnast Boris Shakhlin to share his impressions of the men’s competition.

– We saw almost all the strongest athletes. Not all of them were able to compete for a place on the Olympic team: some were not in the best shape; others did not hope for a miracle, resigned to the role of bystanders; others simply “burned out,” unable to withstand the competition. Was it fierce, this competition? I wouldn’t say very much, but it was fierce.

Those who applied for the team had to endure the hardest tests. And they, by the way, are not over yet. Schukin, Maleev, and Mikaelian, I think, coped with the psychological and physical stresses, and they need to keep up the same tone, polish their routines, and not slow down in any way.

Compared to the Kyiv championship, the gymnasts achieved a more accurate performance of the compulsory exercises. But the shortcomings still remained, they must be eliminated at the final stage of preparation for the Olympics.

“Our brother” is getting more and more difficult — one more day has already been added to the Olympic program. Now the gymnasts will have to work hard on endurance; otherwise, they will not have enough strength.

And the three leaders — Andrianov, Klimenko, Voronin — have real prospects to fight for medals in Munich. This is my firm conviction,” Boris Anfiyanovich concluded.

Я попросил нашего прославленного гимнаста Бориса Шахлина поделиться впечатлениями о соревнованиях мужчин.

— Мы увидели почти всех сильнейших спортсменов. Далеко не все из них могли бороться за место в олимпийской команде: одни были не в лучшей форме, другие и не надеялись на чудо, смирившись  с ролью сторонних наблюдателей, третьи — попросту «перегорели», не выдержав конкуренции. Была ли она острой, эта конкуренция? Не скажу чтобы очень, но была.

Том, кто претендовал в команду, пришлось вынести труднейшие испытания. И они, к слову сказать, еще не закончены. Щукин, Малеев, Микаэлян, мне кажется, с психологическими и физическими нагрузками справились, Им надо и дальше поддерживать себя в таком же тонусе, шлифовать комбинации, ни в коем случае не сбавлять темпы.

По сравнению с киевским чемпионатом гимнасты добились более четкого исполнения обязательных упражнений. Но недостатки все-таки остались, их необходимо устранить на завершающем этапе подготовки к Олимпиаде.

«Нашему брату» становится все тяжелее — вот уже в олимпийской программе добавился еще один день. Теперь гимнастам много придется работать над выносливостью, иначе сил не хватит.

А три лидера — Андрианов, Клименко, Воронин — имеют реальные перспективы сражаться за медали в Мюнхене. Это мое твердое убеждение, — заключил Борис Анфиянович.

– The high bar was considered to be my lagging apparatus. I had to work hard to catch up. And here I am, the coveted medal. I want to congratulate the other gymnasts — Klimenko, Schukin, Mikaelian, Maleev. They showed interesting routines. It seems that our work on the horizontal bar is getting better.
